Hello, all. Thanks for the opportunity to join your kick a$$ campaign. Here's my character.
Name: Skeksis (skeck-sees) the Flightless
Level: 9
Class(es): Psion (seer/clairsentient)
Race: Aarakocra
Physical Description:
Skeksis is a decrepit wretch of an Aarakocra and it is obvious to any observer that he has lived a harsh life. His hunched six-and-a-half-foot, thin frame is covered in drab, worn plumage and draped in a simple tan cloak with a rarely used hood. The gnarled talons of his clipped wings, now useless for flight, grip a dasl shortspear that is used more for support than action. His ever vigilant, intense black eyes dart about, missing nothing yet seeming to focus on something far off, giving the Aarakocra an air of subtle paranoia. He skulks about on long, clawed toes in an awkward hobble-hop motion that seems to be part jump and part step.
Skeksis has few possessions and carries only a handful baubles in belt pouches strapped to his waist, where a stiffened leather falconer-style blinding hood dangles from leather straps.
Skeksis is sullen and reserved, often to the point of rudeness. He uses few words and sees no necessity for propriety and etiquette. His life experiences have left him with a decidedly slanted outlook on life and the world and his every action seems to be carried with a grudge and executed out of spite. He knows virtually nothing of companionship and trust.

Background:
Skeksis was raised as a slave in the city-state of Nibenay from the moment he hatched. In those early days his desire for open spaces was largely suppressed by the falconer-style blinding hood that his master kept on him frequently, removing it only when the young Aarakocra was indoors or in some other secured, enclosed space.
Skeksis barely remembers those times and rarely recollects them. He does, however, recall the countless long hours trapped in the infinite darkness of the hardened leather hood; a darkness that would show him the path to light.
In the long darkness, Skeksis sought solace in his solitude and imagined himself soaring in open skies and dreamed of unknown mountain visages. It was during these long mediations of endless introspect that Skeksis first tapped into his latent clairsentient psionic abilities.
Shortly after discovering his newfound penchant, and deciding to keep such things from the ken of others, Skeksis’ master endured the inevitable times of struggle found all too frequently on Athas and was forced to sell the Aarakocra. Skeksis was sold to a disreputable merchant from Raam.
After the long, dark journey from Nibenay to Raam, he discovered the true harsh realities of Athasian slavery. Little was demanded of Skeksis during his initial years in Raam. He served as an attraction, an oddity and a rarity to be gawked and awed at.
That was, until Skeksis grew tired of the jeers and prods. Frustration overtook the lonely Aarakocra and he lashed out at a child who had wandered too closely to the display cage and snatched a feather.
For his outrageous actions, Skeksis was muzzled, his talons clipped, and his feathers were unceremoniously plucked. For days Skeksis was displayed in the area in which his offense occurred, the relentless Athasian sun cooking his virgin skin, all the while the public introducing a new level of ridicule, torment, and shame. For Skeksis, this was the ultimate in retributive punishment. He would be lashed, berated, and starved countless times after his public display, but none of it would reverberate in his mind as that incident did…until several years later.
It was shortly after this that his master inadvertently discovered Skeksis’ self-taught powers of the mind. His master quickly set about using the powers of his property to increase his own prosperity through suspect methods. He frequently demanded Skeksis use his powers to increase his master’s wealth and influence, often through devious action. The Aarakocra didn’t mind; it allowed him to practice and increase his powers.
One evening Skeksis’ tormenting and relentless master demanded that the Aarokocra display a fraction of his flight ability for his guests during a hosted event. Skeksis gave his best effort, but years of cages had nearly atrophied his flying muscles. He failed miserably in his attempts and was unable to accommodate his masters’ wishes.
His master burst forth in rage. “What use to me is a bird-man who can’t even fly.” He berated, viciously backhanding Skeksis. “If these wings are so useless, I guess you don’t even need them.” With that, his master ordered his other slaves to hold Skeksis to the ground and spread his wings. With merciless hack after hack, over the deafening cries of the Aarakocra, his master brutally crunched bone, feather, and sinew. Skeksis would never fly again.
It was during this time of suffering that Skeksis utterly withdrew from everything. He spent all of his time that was not efficiently occupied by his master’s biddings under his trusted and comforting blinder hood. It was in these deep meditations within the long dark that he struck all thought of freedom, true freedom, from his mind. The realization was harsh; even if he were to shrug the shackles of servitude, he would never know the feeling of soaring in the air currents or the rush of chasing the setting crimson sun to the horizon. (This all culminated in the forming of his psycrystal)
As is wont to happen in Raam, Skeksis’ master was eventually caught in one of his questionable dealings, and found himself on the business end of a bard’s poisoned garrotte. Skeksis shed no tears for his brutal former master.
His torment would now be complete as Skeksis was nearly worthless as a slave. This fact was validated when his brutal master’s assets were seized and he was placed on the open slave market. Day after day, he was passed over, left as useless overstock until one day when an older man paused to take note of the Aarakocra. The mysterious man leered at Skeksis then raised a small green gem to his right eye, closing the left. “An interesting talent you have there.” Skeksis finally had a new master.
He now serves, as always, biding his time, relentlessly honing his abilities. He knows that his body is frail and weak, unable to withstand the harsh, relentless torments of Athas. But his mind… if it were strong enough, could enable him toss the shackles of servitude and provide him with the strength and power he would need to survive on his own. All he needs is time.
