Not satisfied with the blood spilled during their short-lived short, these two want to duke out it for ultimate supremacy among PCs with less than a five week lifespan!!! Today we have; Rediel Sooledraaw - Japic's PC, a level 7 (Rogue 1/Fighter 6) Human. Versus Tirion Martinson - TopTomCat's PC, a level 6 human Swordsage. Both have agreed to fair match moderated by KMan in the battefield made for resolving such hypothetical match-ups. Both know the rules; - It is to the death, though no death is permanent. Bodies of the fallen are immediately attended to and seen to full recovery after the match.
- There will be no intervention by outside forces.
- There is no time to cast prepatory spells or imbibe helpful potions. The combatants may do so once in the arena, but only as part of combat.
- You both may roll your own dice or leave it to me. If I suspect edited posts for dice rolls, the game is disqualified and we will run again with only me casting the dice.
Aside from this, please try to post in order of Initiative and please refrain from meta-gaming. Let's have a good match!!
The dust shaken from above rains over you. Thump....Thump...RAH! The crowd is anticipating a good fight. They stomp their feet, shaking the wooden and stone structure like an angry giant. You hear shouts, applause and calls for souvenirs. The grating above you is brightly lit by torchlight, but the platform you stand on rests in darkness. You close your eyes, grip your blade and feel the wooden elevator jerk to life. The ratcheting of the chain becomes almost hypnotic, lulling you into a battle-hardened trance. *Click*The elevator stops. Your eyes snap open. You are in the arena, the crowd fuels your lust for battle...it's time to meet your foe... {Addendum: Rediel will lose his 'Avant-Guarde' ability and Tirion loses his 'Unassuming' ability--which is moot anyway because Rediel is the only available target. It would be unfair advantage for Rediel in this arena setting to go first with a proper dice roll.}

Tirion stands where he is, taking in the sights and sounds of the arena. He slowly drops into a low, relaxed fighting stance, hand hovering above the hilt of his cane sword. When Rediel appears, he fixes him with a peircing glare, and his voice rings out across the arena. "You're going to die, boy!" (Spot +2, Listen +11. Readying demoralize opponent attempt if and when Rediel appears in LOS: Intimidate +9.)

{I read that as Tirion stands) Feeling the roar of the crowd pulsing in his veins Reidel knows that this is the kind of glory he lived for. He would be victorious or die trying; either way he would make a good show if it. When Rediel appears, he fixes him with a peircing glare, and his voice rings out across the arena. " You're going to die, boy!" {not sure if this actually happens without me being seen, I'm guessing not} Wasting no time Riedel moves quickly toward the center of the arena (move 30 ft) and the massive stone pillar which held the ceiling at bay. Not spotting his opponent on either of the platforms in his field of vision Riedel closes the remaining distance towards the pillars and puts his back agains the cool stone. His ears strain for any sign of additional noise from within the arena and his eyes scan the crowd hoping that someone there might betray his opponents position. (Listen +4 Spot +6 if applicable to determine where Tirion is.) {Both swords are drawn incase that had to be said}

Tirion remains in place, calling out to his opponent. He holds his position, ready to demoralize him...or her, as soon as he can see the whites of their eyes. [Ready Action] Hearing the call of the enemy, Rediel rushes the center pillar and throws his back against it. Tirion simply stays where he is, hands and body absolutely still. He is present, he is prepared; that is all he needs. (Same readied action; demoralize when enemy visible.)

{Before my action I thought perhaps I should give TTC a chance to change his. I don't think you're using demoralize correct TTC. I looked into it to see what would happen to me and I read this:
{Would you like a different action instead? Or is there some obscure errata that I've never seen which exempts this rule?}

Huh. Threaten in melee, eh? That is odd. My mistake, then. Simply a readied attack.

{Sorry, it's to me... I need to pay closer attention. Don't forget TTC that if you're choosing to ready something you should include the trigger.}
Wondering just what his foe was up to Reidel decides to move around the post to see if he could locate the man.
(30 foot move should put me here on the bottom row of the big pillar: [===]R-)
He then sees the fellow he'd come to fight. He seemed to be waiting for something... maybe he doesn't know the fight has begun he mused.
"For a minute there I thought that you wouldn't show!" He calls across the distance so that both his opponent and the crowd could hear.
Not sure what the opponent has in mind he braces himself for what may come, and prepares for the worst. (full defense AC 23)

Tirion remains at the ready, hoping someone or something appears within striking distance. [Ready Action. Trigger = Approach] Rediel finally rounds the large central pillar and the two enemies spot each other. Rediel Sooledraaw and Tirion Martinson--it would be a bloody battle today! Rediel calls to his enemy and holds in place, using the pillar for defense. "Yet here I am. Should you wish to survive my presence, you would do well to focus on me and not on the crowd or your own glory." Tirion dashes forward with a deep, rumbling battle cry. When his sword leaves its scabbard, Rediel is shocked to discover that its target is not him, but his weapon! A shuddering shock wave travels up his arm, numbing his fingers and stinging his forearm... [Stance is Punishing Stance; -4 AC, +1d6 damage. Maneuver; Exorcism of Steel. Charging. A sunder attempt on the short sword in Rediel's primary hand follows; if it hits and does not destroy the sword, Rediel takes a -4 penalty on all damage rolls with it. A DC 15 Will save will reduce the penalty by half.] Exorcism of Steel (1d20+10=26) Exorcism of Steel damage (1d10+4+1d6=10) [Not enough to bypass Hardness, but the secondary effect is still in the running if your opposed attack roll, at -4 due to the size of your weapon, does not beat 26.] [Edit: I have just realized that I neglected to add the modifiers for charging in my attack roll. The actual roll is 28.]

The actual roll is 28.] For TTC: I would prefer to not get in the habit of editing posts, at least once dice have been rolled. However, I do see some errors in your actions. To invoke Exorcism of Steel it is a standard action that grants an attack, not a secondary effect added to an attack made that round. Charging is a full round action that grants one attack--you cannot use Exorcism of Steel and charge at the same time. It would be similar to a mage charging and casting Shocking Grasp to deliver a touch attack at the end of the charge, too many actions (full + standard). Also, I know you had said the map is ambiguous, so I will note here the distance needed to close 60ft to Rediel and where you will end up. MAP |---(-)------------[===]------------(-)---| |------------------[===]R-----------------| |----------------------*------------------| |----------------------*------------------| |----------------------*------------------| \----------------------*------------------/ \----------[=]--------*----[=]----------/ \--------------------*----------------/ \-------------------*---------------/ \------------------*--------------/ \-----------------*-------------/ \---------------*-------------/ \------------(T)------------/ \-------------------------/
[/size] Each * is 5ft of movement, with the * being the second diagonal so the movement counts out like this; 5, 10-15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 Since you must charge the closest square from which you can make a melee attack, this is the path that gets you to that square-- though this square does provide Rediel cover. You will be attacking around the corner. You can charge unimpeded to the square, but the square grants cover. Lucky for you though, the third diagonal counts as only 5ft so you are equi-distant from two available closest squares to Rediel, so you get to pick! Your other optional charge line would look like this; MAP |---(-)------------[===]------------(-)---| |------------------[===]R-----------------| |-----------------------*-----------------| |-----------------------*-----------------| |-----------------------*-----------------| \-----------------------*-----------------/ \----------[=]---------*---[=]----------/ \---------------------*---------------/ \--------------------*--------------/ \-------------------*-------------/ \-----------------*-------------/ \---------------*-------------/ \------------(T)------------/ \-------------------------/
[/size] Notice how it's still 55ft to Rediel, and this time no cover. Anyways, I apologize for the huge post with nothing to talk about. In short, TTC, because of the error, you may repost a new action based on information provided.

"Yet here I am. Should you wish to survive my presence, you would do well to focus on me and not on the crowd or your own glory." Tirion strides slowly forward with a low, striding motion, staying in his stance and keeping his hand above his sword. (30 ft movement forewards, readied Intimidate check on approach. Stance is Pearl of Black Doubt.)

(I won't bust anyone's nuts over speaking more than 6 words for free, just don't monologue on me, eh?)
Laughing, Reidel steps around the base of the pillar and closes with the wordy fool. "Lets get acquainted chum," he calls as he goes.
(move action, end up NE of Tirion. Should trigger Intimidate, demoralize I presume.)
[dice=20](13)+7=20 vs unknown DC (TTCs intimidate check @+9)
With the attempt to bring him low Reidel has a moment of doubt and continues with his action anyhow. He swings Tooth in a quick arc, hoping to find a chink in the armor.
[dice=20](10)+13= 23 (21 if shaken)
[dice=6](5)+7= 12 damage

Tirion advances, ready to shake this opponent with pure will as soon as he comes close enough. [30ft and ready] Rediel takes the bait and advances, calling out his own mocking quips. [Trigger Ready Action] Tirion Intimidate Check @ +9 [dice=20] [Die Results = 10+9 = 19 Vs. Rediel's Check 20, Fail.] Try as he might, Tirion is unable to shake the steely reserve of Rediel and the warrior swings away. [Have updated Init as result of readied action] Rediel brings his blade down in an arc across Tirion's chest, drawing a thin red line of blood. [Attack Results = 23, Hit. Damage Results = 12] Rediel prepares to finish this... With an odd motion of the wrist, Tirion delivers a vicious slice aimed at the back of his opponent's hand. (Disarming Strike; attack at +8. If a hit, attack will do normal damage and allow a subsequent disarm attack (on the primary hand weapon) that does not provoke an AoO and does not risk being disarmed myself will follow.)
