"What makes you think this Nola needs our help, Clyde?" Coppertop asks simply. "While obvious that you favor the woman, you have not said a word about what ails you?"
His compassion for the man is beginning to wear thin, as thoughts of this Clyde fellow being a spurned lover float through his brain. Does she really need saving, or is the human playing another angle?
[Sense motive as well @ +7]

"No, no!" Clyde pleas, "Nola set off up the mountain all alone nearly a week ago, but the attacks haven't stopped." The man suddenly looks very dour, "I don't know what's happened to her, but Bald Mountain is no place for a lone warrior, half-dragon or no."
(Clyde seems to be telling the truth, although it seems odd that he's focusing more on this Nola person than his fellow village members who are being attacked. It could just be a statement of his character though.)

Brim gives Tyvek a scolding look, never a big fan of his lack of compassion for commoners. [OOC - you'll need more than +5 on your listen check - Tyvek's about a quarter of a mile up] With nothing in sight Tyvek returns to ground level, his power allowing him to move with impossible speed. Approaching the group he stands within earshot but does not offer futher comment on the commoner's condition. Coppertop was not known for his patience, one way or another this conversation would not delay them much longer.

"And what attacks might those be, sir? Perhaps you'd better start at the beginning and tell us what is really going on; before, during and after Nalas disappearance."
If the man doesn't say something useful soon, Coppertop may well abandon his search for information. There was no reason to interrogate the man if he's done nothing wrong.

"Not Nala," Clyde corrects, "Nola! Well, Noladrahsa is her full name. Anywho, this horrible monster's been attacking Tempest Gorge. It's as tall as a house, with black scales and glowing eyes. It's kidnapped some and ... melted others." Clyde gulps and cringes, "It breathes acid, you see." Shaking his head, the commoner finally seems to have realized the situation the rest of his neighbors are in, "Will you help them too? I don't think the town will last much longer unless somebody stops this beast."
(Tyvek (Knowledge [arcana]): Tyvek can't help but think black dragon from Clyde's description of the monster. To be terrorizing a town so freely, it's likely at least Young Adult in age, although it may be older if Clyde's size account is accurate.)
(Language (Draconic): Those in the group who speak Draconic find Noladrahsa an uncommon name for a half-gold.)
(Knowledge (arcana): However, it's common knowledge that half-dragons are often raised by their non-dragon parent and given names based on that parent's language.)

Black dragons. Tyvek considered the spells at his disposal ... more than adequate to the task but the magical resistance of such a beast should not be dismissed and his companions were not as well equipped to pursue an airborne foe.
To bring such a beast to the earth where it would be vulnerable, to hold it there ... yes, Tyvek nodded silently to himself, such a task was within his power.

FYI- Tyvek's Arcane Sight senses that Clyde is under the effects of a 4th level enchantment spell.

"The man is ensorcelled." Tyvek's tone was blunt and certain, "Magic of not inconsiderable power."
A pause and then "perhaps we were expected here, why send a man to an untravelled crossroad?"

Clyde's face pales, "Ensorcelled?!" He looks about himself, brushing off his clothes as though that would remove his condition, "You lie! I don't feel ensorcelled. Unless ... unless it was old widow McCratchett. I always thought that woman was a witch!"
(Knowledge (arcana): While Clyde may have his own theories, Tyvek doubts an old human crone from a small village would have access to spells that powerful. Of course, he's seen stranger things ... much stranger things.)

Standing up, Coppertop turns away from the man and to face several of his companions. In a low voice he offers his own thoughts. "Perhaps this Nola is the one who has him. It is not impossible to consider that she would charm this man into doing anything she wished. That might explain why he cares more for her than anything else in the village."
Glancing back down, he gives the man an appraising look. "Nara aside, this beastie does warrant some concern. Sounds like this village could use our assistance Gentlemen. What say you?"

Tyvek glanced towards the sky, gauging the time. "How far are we from this town?"
[OOC - Tyvek can cover a day's walking distance in about 15 minutes, but doesn't have the teleport capacity for the whole party]

Brim does a poor job of hiding his puzzled response, very don't-be-ridiculous. "Of course we're investigating. Sounds of a knot that wants our untangling. The spell, this dragon woman, the monster, and its prisoners. We'll need a more competent source of information, however." He frowns at the man.
"Show us to Tempest Gorge."

Clyde points to the northwest. In the distance, the group can't help but notice a mountain range with great, dark, billowing storm clouds draping the highest peak. "You can't miss it," he comments sarcastically. He heads off down the road, expecting everyone else to follow.
(~30 miles away. You're currently on open plains, you'll reach foothills about 20 miles down the road, and Tempest Gorge is nestled where the foothills turn to mountains.)
