I was curious to see if anyone is interested in a shorter Call of Cthulhu game to run alongside of The very very Long Masks of Nyarlathotep game?
At first I was thinking of Continuing the Tabloid Truths game but then I realized that two of the players are currently in on Masks, as well as one Keeping the game, and myself playing it.
I figure it would be nice to have a one-shot/potential continuation game going in it's stead and it would be a good way to introduce new players from this D&D heavy boards to another fun and very different game.
I would be looking for 3-4 players and since the boards are getting very game heavy, expected posting would be minimal, perhaps once every days, more would be nice though.
Game wise what I had in mind was either: 1. Giving "The Haunting", your run of the mill first timer's scenario another go. As my last attempt had all of the players drop out (This was prior to Tabloid Truth revival).
Or
2. Running a Scenario that I have been tinkering with myself. It has a potential for continuation (as does the Haunting done right). But right now is little more than an outline with a bunch of ideas in a word document. I figure actually running it would truly flesh the story out and I would get to see where players would take it.

"The Haunting" is good fun. First game I ever ran. Jolith may know it as the start of the 'Thomas' campaign I ran way, way back. Go for it, man! I unfortunately cannot find the time to add anything more onto my schedule (I need to cut back, actually), but I will watch and cheer on from the sidelines.

I wouldnt mind giving the Haunting another go at all. There were some problems from the get go with that, I tried to run it here like 3 years ago. (Don't dig it up if you plan on playing, we didn't get far into it at all but I liked the hook, it leaves a lot open to future adventures). One such problem was a player decided to play as a Neo-Nazi professor who couldn't really justify to me carrying around two 9mms but I didn't want to put my foot down because I was trying to drum up interest in the game. Another player dropped out completely from the boards so that didn't help at all.
Now I'm curious as to whether or not I should handle investigators by making Pregenerated ones for a straight forward one-shot for the players. Because drudging through the rules can be a hassle for new players, but at the same time having a very personalized character adds a little extra element to your investigation.
I'll run The Haunting. Perhaps K-man or another Admin can add another board to the Masks/Tabloid Truths section, so we can Keep all of the Call of Cthulhu games organized together.
If anyone is interested, I'll use this as the interest thread, 2-4 Players would be needed for this game.

Never played CoC before, but am interested in giving it a try. I stumbled upon a copy in the book store, but haven't had the gumption to actually buy it yet.
You know the scenario. Walk into the store, browse the aisles for something cool, just about to settle on CoC, then BAM out of the corner of my eye, some Promethean or M&M supplement I haven't gotten yet. There goes CoC's chance one more time.
I am really into the whole feel of the game though. I've been watching Masks a little, but I still haven't stapled down all of the nuances.

I've never played CoC before Masks, but I really, really like it and would recommend you give it a try, Arclite. I'm having a lot of fun in Masks, as it's almost entirely roleplay. Though the character sheet/stats looks complicated, it's intuitive and hardly intrudes into gameplay. It feels very "cinematic" at times as well; when Sam, Thurman and Rebecca were paging through forbidden texts and Tommy, Joe and Jeremy were busting into an actual horrific sacrificial ceremony, I could easily imagine the camera cutting back and forth...with each page turned, the chanting cultists and the screams from the pit get louder and louder.

You don't need to book to play here, I have a copy and will give a full run down on everything as needed. In fact there are one or two posts already among the Masks and tabloid games that have them. Maestro is right it is a majority of roleplaying, so you have to rely more on your brain and wits to come up on top rather than a weapon or even your skills. The skills are handy, but not your limits as an investigator. If you are interested, I'll be running a very introductory scenario and I would be more than happy to have you aboard. In fact I invite anyone who hasn't played CoC to give it a shot. If we don't have that many adventurous enough to try, Id be pleased to have other players from masks, providing they do not have too too many games going (in that they might not be able to post.)

and also
Thats probably the main reason why I'm so drawn to this game, and to the world of darkness series for that matter, is the fact that it is more about the role than the roll. I'm a huge fan of nearly any mystery/action movie, and find alot of what I like in the little ive experienced of this.
Sign me up! ;D

I've always wanted to play a CoC game. But since I don't know the rules, it would probably take me two months to create a character.
If you provide me with a pre-generated character I'd love to play. However, I would still like to create my own background (leaning towards a forest ranger working for the National Park Service. He's like a cop, but knows a lot about geography, nature, ecology, etc. I'm not sure if he will fit in to your game idea, though).

Anoba, have you taken a look through the character creation guidelines for the Masks of Nyarlathotep? Honestly, thinking up a good character background probably took me longer than distributing stats and skill points. A few hours total, spread over a day or two for me, max, and I'd never even seen a CoC char sheet before.

I can pregenerate one for you if want, sure. I can do the whole shebang if you want.

MaestroXC, thanks for your vote of confidence, but it takes me a full week of constant tweaking just to create a D&D PC. It would take me forever to create one for a new system. Yakumo , a pre-gen'd character would be much appreciated. Here's more detail on the character I had in mind: - A forest ranger working for the National Park Service. He's similar to a cop, but knows a lot about geography, nature, ecology, etc. - He has some people skills as rangers are constantly dealing with backpackers, campers and tourists - He has light training in law enforcement (3 quarters at a community college). He took the class because he knew it would look good on a job application - He posses a government issued revolver though he's never used it (except for that one weekend he had to take a training/safety course). - Here's a potential hook: He is well known to top officials and people in academia for his writings on ecology, geography and other nature related topics. Thanks!

See as far I see it, you've got the hard part done already. ;D
I'm a little jealous, I've got a full plate of games right now, but it's hard not to jump into another CoC game.

Just bumping this back up to the top of things to see if people are still interested, Arclite and Anoba included, to check to see if you are still around. I'd like to do this with at least 3 players, 4 would be optimal.
So for reference: Players: 1.Arclite - If still interested 2.Anoba -If still interested 3.Open 4.Open

Ahh Jeez, I just noticed that, the las time he logged in was 2 months ago. Well at least Anoba is still around. So I have a total of three slots open and I'll go with 3 people.

Great, I'll hash out a character for you this week and send it to you to see if youd like to edit it. at least it will give you something solid while we setup the rest of the investigators.

I had a change of heart on the game as for what scenario I will be running. Check the Campaign status board for more details. Anoba you place is reserved if you are interested after you check it out.

It really sounds like an awesome game you will be running, Yakumo. Sadly, I'm at the moment way over my neck into the examinations and papers to write, otherwise I would surely have considered this. I'll be watching the game, hope you get good players. People should really join this if they get the chance.
