Julian instantly thought about what every demon believed hell once was…it was wrong.
“Well, that’s inter…”
Ophelia slapped a hand over Julian’s mouth so she could immediately address her concerns.
“Did you just say ‘I never said I couldn’t return’?”
Esienyl smiled.
“You ARE quick.”
Julian pulled Ophelia’s hand from his mouth, which remained gaping. It took Ophelia a second to speak and she did so stuttering over the thoughts her mouth tried to produce into words.
“Y…y…you’re…you’re Lucifer? That can’t be. You’re the essence of everything good in heaven and Lucifer is the essence of everything evil in hell.”
Esienyl waved a hand over his face and the instant the pale, smooth-skinned fingers passed over his face, the skin changed to a deep crimson, much like Julian’s. The hair turned a deep black, seemingly drawing all the light in the room into its ebony surface. Two blackened horns protruded wickedly from his forehead and the eyes had changed from the soft yellowed-gold to deep black laced with crimson veins. Even the teeth had changed and deformed into grotesque, pointed things vaguely resembling their former selves. Esienyl brought his hand back upwards and the image faded, returning the great angel to his true image.
Ophelia and Julian could not speak. Both were stunned beyond belief. Julian did manage to mentally note that his whole conception of the world had shattered significantly in the past few days. Esienyl spoke again, the smile spreading farther across his face.
“I am the first angel, the purest, charged with protecting everything and ensuring its continued existence…even if that means creating evil to keep it balanced. I am Lucifer, the Great Balancer.”
Julian and Ophelia still could not find the words to speak.
“I fulfill both positions in heaven and in hell…keeping an eye on everything and making sure it stays balanced.” Esienyl-Lucifer seemed out of explanation for this revelation.
“So…you run hell and heaven at the same time? How has no one noticed your absence from heaven or from hell when you rule the other?” Julian finally found the words to speak.
“There’s an old earth saying…about ‘The greatest trick the devil ever pulled…’” Esienyl’s smile spread even further, seemingly pleased with himself. “Which brings me to my next point.”
“Tricks?” Julian quipped.
Esienyl’s smile faded into a tolerant snort.
“Ah…no. Earth.”
“What about it?” Ophelia managed to ask.
“Well, I understand you know how it was created.”
“Adam and Eve, a demon and an angel falling in love and being banished to a newly created plane…earth.” Julian responded, delighted he had learned so many new things about the history of the universe.
“Yes.” Esienyl turned and continued to walk through the garden behind the building. “They were an anomaly. Heaven was furious that Adam fell for a demon and hell was raging that Eve had fallen for an angel. There was no precedent for what they had done and neither of the two had truly committed a crime, for as arrogant as heaven is and as devious as hell is…neither side can ignore love.”
Julian looked sheepishly towards Ophelia, a look that was returned ten fold. Esienyl went on.
“Well, using my position on both sides, I made sure they would be safe to do as they pleased for they could not be punished for simply loving each other. I oversaw the creation of earth, a place where they would be left alone for eternity.”
Julian nodded, the puzzle pieces coming together mentally.
“In retrospect…a mistake I now have to correct.”
Esienyl stopped his walk and once again spun on his heel, asking the next question.
“Do you know why?”
“Balance…” Julian and Ophelia muttered simultaneously, slowly understanding Esienyl-Lucifer’s position in the universe.
“Right.” The great angel gestured with his hands as he detailed his point. “Think of the universe as balancing on a point. You have heaven on one end, hell on the other…each balancing the other and holding the fabric of reality together. Well…now here’s earth.”
Esienyl-Lucifer moved his hands gesturing a single point, with two more points on either side representing heaven and hell. He moved his hands to a third point, at a right angle and outwards from his previous two points.
“Two are balanced, three are unbalanced. I created earth in haste as a response to a problem and it has been going downhill ever since.” Esienyl gestured with his hands in a smooth downward stroke, mimicking a falling object. “Things were fine until the fruit of Adam and Eve’s passion, the first human came along. Then more humans…and more until now, when the plane of earth is causing a severe imbalance of both heaven and hell.”
Julian and Ophelia remained silent and attentive.
