It'll just cost you 10 $ a month.
Quote: Every single D&D rules element (including all races, classes, paragon paths, epic destinies, skills, feats, powers, items, and rituals appearing in our printed books and in online magazine articles) is stored in a vast database that you can search online using the D&DI Compendium. Anyone can use this tool to search for D&D rules elements and locate them by sourcebook. Subscribers only gain full access to the rules text, as it appears in the printed book.
Granted, it is sort of better than the SRD, in that you get everything wizards publishes.

OOH! OOH! Who else likes paying for things they already own? ME! ME!
.... right. And here is another major reason for my contestation of this conversion. I do not like this turn of events. Gaming is great because it is relatively inexpensive. This puts a monthly cos on my accessing anything useful for the system (as they'll be charging for the other insider stuff like map tools and virtual gaming table and such), and drives up the cost of my hobby. As it stands, barring the purchase of any new books (haven't purchased one in many months) my gaming is free, and that's the way I like it.
It's like buying an online video game, then paying someone every month to play the game you bought. I hate it with a passion. While it could be argued that having access to "all" materials as new books are published is a great boon, I'm not so sure. A book costs $30 ish, you've got that book for as long as you keep it. The three core books could run you about $100, that's ten months worth of access to these three core books, plus whatever else they pump out. The arguement stands that the online monthly purchase is cheaper than buying every book; that's $10 a month versus closer to $30 as they put out new books every month.
The problem for me is that if one were to fall on hard times he'd see that he's been throwing his money away; for now he has neither access to those materials or hard copies of the info he duly paid for already. Not my idea of a good time.

They will charge for anything people will pay for. If you pay for this crap, you are telling them you are willing to do so, and they will do it again. Anybody who does not like this "turn in events", should keep their money in their wallets!
I will not be buying 4th, let alone paying a monthly fee for online access to the same rules. My gaming group and I are having a lot of fun with 2nd Ed., with books bought years ago.

I'm willing to pay the monthly fee...
... for about a month until I can scrape all the text and put in in my own damn compiled HTML help file that I can take anywhere. Hell, I'd pay someone $10 a month just to save me all the typing I've been considering for 3.5. I can then put in my own character generator, die roller, and whatever else web-based tools I need and sit at the table with everything at my fingertips.

Oh yeah, and what's that Wizards? You put out 3 $30 books this month? Here's my $10 monthly fee to re-subscribe, *scrape scrape* insert into help file*...thanks! See you after the next few releases!
If wizards is cool enough to supply me with digital text, than I applaud them.

You do know the K-man's policy on piracy, right?
Also, the pdf Monster manual has very many wrong stats, apparently.
