These are my very first attempts at miniature photography. I have a lot to learn about getting good photos, as well as painting, obviously (!), but it's amazing how taking pictures of your work clarifies what you need to do to improve.

I have to say that I'm not sure what you feel neds improvement here, I think it looks pretty good. I used to paint Chainmail Minis, and then a bunch of warhammer 40k stuff. I think this looks great, and ask any of my friends, I'm a "paint nazi". They dubbed me so because I feel there's a right way and a wrong way, not much inbetween.

That looks great spiral! Awesome painting as usual (spiral was easily the best of us all playing Warhammer at school). What did you use to snap that picture? How did you get it so up close without bluriness?

I decided to go hunting and found old (and not so great) pictures of my old 40k army. I think the clearcoat (maybe matte) finish that we sprayed lots of them with has dulled lots of the colors. Man, looking back I'm noticing that most of the pictures are hella blurry and crappy, mores the pitty. Maybe some day I'll pull out my old Chainmail minis and take a few photos. I really enjoyed painting those guys, since every piece was unique. Not like in 40k where you need to field an army of 50 guys in matching uniforms. p.s. thanks to KMan still for the terrain pictured with the Marines, it was a b-day present many years ago.

Wicks, I just use the "Macro" mode on my very average digital camera. It's for close-up shots. I think you're better off with a lens though. You'll see below, if you try to "Macro" shoot something longer, placed at an angle, the focus is hard to get right.
I love those pink marines, and the Dark Eldar are very cool too! Nice pics, I'd forgotten about that thread!

Here's a Nurgle Predator in very nearly complete state. I just need to gloss some of the flesh parts, and the slug foot, but you get the idea here. There's lots I am going to do different a second time around, but hey, that's how you learn right. Meh, lots I am unhappy with on here, but hope you enjoy it anyway. =) {The slug foot was hand modelled out of clay, as were the vestibules on top, and pink appendage wrapped around the turret gun, and boils on the side, and eyes on the front. The rest of the corruption effects were a mix of sand, glue, and a soldering iron!}

I think we stopped getting paint 'cause the guy at the Warhammer store was starting to get scary. They're very pushy people.
My poor pink marines. The cat broke them all.

Huh, sounds like someone could run a Dark Heresy game around here.

I think i last saw it when it was just a bog standard one before most of the conversion had taken effect. Thats golden deamon standard there mate!

Here I sit harmlessly painting my Blood Bowl Team (first time painter here) and while waiting for the paint to dry I decide to have a look at KMan's and directly get depressed by these wonderful pictures. You guys are evil.

Well, spiral has been at it for must be nearly 15 years Even i got to mediocre standards after a while. My advice is start simple. Work on base colours then slowly apply shading and detail. I'd prefer to see a basically painted army with little detail but one that has been carefully than an attempt to paint at top notch standard straight away. I was the latter type of painter and binned my early models because i was embarrassed by them.

Wicks, thanks for the compliment, but it's nowhere near Golden Demon standard mate! =)
Piranjade, stick at it, enjoy it, and remember to paint with a goal in mind - a Blood Bowl team needs to look good on the field, not in a display cabinet ! have fun!

The painting looks good. From a Photography angle I think I may be able to offer a bit of help.
How are you lighting these?
It looks like your using a hard light from slightly above on a paper background?
It looks like you may be using your flash as well?
check out: strobist.blogspot.com/2006/07/how-to-diy-10-macro-photo-studio.html - 266k and look up the $10 macro studio
rather than off camera flashes you can us continuous light sources such as lamps with daylight balanced bulbs or even a work light or two
Strobist should give some good methods to help you photograph minis.
Hope this helps you out.

Thanks BluSpecs. I am using one long bulb lamp above the mini right now, on a paper background. I am not using the camera flash. When I get a second lamp, and daylight bulbs for both, I am expecting the snaps to improve a great deal. Nice links!
