Background:
Raised with his two older sisters by his father, after his mother died in childbirth, Terrace grew up in the streets of the Phoenix Homage district of Balmouth's Quarter. Not nearly a quarter of the whole city, Balmouth's Quarter was named for the "quarters" of Alema Balmouth, a local politician who grew to prominance about a hundred and fifty years before Terrace was born. The district has, on the whole, declined a bit since then, but for families like the Rylans, it remains a fairly safe place to live and raise children. This relative quietude is thanks in part to the Gentle Hand, Firm Touch order of monks that have provided for generations a system of law and order based upon neighborly mutual consideration, and the underlying assurance of an even older devotion to thorough and rapid investigation of any misdeeds. The monks of this order are seemingly omnipresent in the community, and because of their investigative prowess, have occasionally done contract work for nearby districts if a difficult case comes up. The reason the monks are so well trusted in the Quarter is their policy of complete transparency in their investigations and the records thereof; never has a malefactor been able to make a credible claim that his case was mishandled or that he was unfairly judged. As he grew up and travelled the city during his teens, Terrace saw how different and dangerous the streets of Phoenix Homage could be. When he was 16, rather than join his father in his small tailoring business, he chose to join the Gentle Hand order to help ensure the community that seemed so precious to him would remain safe. He proved a talented adept in the schools of logic and martial arts that the monks maintained, and on several occasions he travelled with four older investigators to nearby townships when trouble arose, as part of a five-member Hand of monks who were on special assignment. It was on the return trip from the most recent of these cases, which involved a series of kidnappings, that the mysterious illustration found it's way into his cloak. With the permission of the head Inquisitor of his order, he made the three-day journey to answer this call, to assist if needed, and gather information while spreading the comforting name of the Gentle Hand, Firm Touch monks.
