I thought everyone would enjoy this picture display of my dice and paper game we played this Saturday.
This particular battle is a culmination of several things. One, as you may know, the PCs are all monster races going against an army of "pure" races calling themselves The Hammer of Purification. The PCs have never really had an all-out confrontation with The Hammer, only striking and running here and there.
Through adventuring, the PCs come across a group of elite warriors, calling themselves the "PureHearts", led by a human named U'Star. They don't trust thei guy from the get-go, but he does command a group of 300 elite ex-Hammer warriors claiming they are laying aside their life of genocide, and trying to help the monsters. Well, U'Star begins to build a name for himself, killing several small Hammer patrols and saving countless monsters. Soon enough, he has amassed over 3,500 monsters for an army to fight The Hammer...pretty much the last of the monsters in the world willing to fight.
Meanwhile, the PCs are attacking The Hammer...specifically at a place called The Octagon of Power. A place where 8 towers, one for each school of magic, pump out mages for The Hammer and generate their seemingly endless supply of magic weapons unweildable to monster kind. They cause a ruckus there and destroy a few buildings and kill some people before running away back to their archaic ship.
U'Star spreads word of an assault on The Hammer since they have diverted 2/3 of their army to The Octagon to investigate the occurence there. He's going to march his 3,500+ army with his elite "PureHearts" onto the biggest city The Hammer occupies in an attempt to knock them down a peg.
Well, the PCs get wind of this and decide to go check it out. They find U'Star with his army outside the city gates, readying for battle. Well, being PCs they go against U'Star's wishes and check out the field and decide to drop a few fireballs over the city...you know, to jumpstart things. Anyway, they find several invisible figures on the battlefield and decide they are Hammer infiltrators...so they jump them. Low and behold, they are some of U'Star's PureHearts....so battle begins.
(Before and During Shots)
(Some more random shots)
Well let's just say battle took so long and there were so many creatures involved..that at one point we had to resort to a change jar for extra things to represent creatures.
What was the result you say?
Well things were going splendidly for the PCs...their initial suprise fireball attack cleaned up an assload of Hammer soldiers + mages...their monster forces were at the gates, ready to crush all before them.
But U'Star had a different agenda...
His goal was one in number and simple...teleport one thing to the battlefield, one of the PCs father. This PC had requested to play a silver dragon, so I let him, under the premise that his background would be troublesome indeed. Well before the campaign even started I determined that his father would be a major villain in the campaign. And he is. He's a corrupt great wyrm silver dragon that sold out his kind for treasure and obviously turned evil. He know guards the horde of treasure at The Hammer's vault...the largest collection of items in the known world. He's also a Disciple of Ashardalon. (For those of you without a Dragonomicon...it's a dragon that removes its' own heart in lieu of a demon instead...obviously evil)
Well U'Star manages to get off his spell to summon this player dad...and the PCs run like little girls.
So the battle ended with the Great Wyrm Half-Fiend Silver Dragon gracing the field...I wonder why?
If you guys would like, I'll keep you posted on the events in the campagn...I've got some good ones coming up. I just thought everyone would like to see what dice and paper is like at my house.
By the way most the miniatures supplied in the pics were from www.gatheringground.com/store/. Guys, I highly recommend getting minis from these guys. Dan, in sales, is awesome and ensured I would get my order by the Saturday game. Check em out and tell 'em I sent ya!! Whatever game you play, they have it.
