Navarre buys an umbrella, clothing for cold and rainy weather, two thick blanket, towels, and a weather proof tent (explaining that his mule can not climb trees, and thus might need it for protection against the elements).
After everyone has finished shopping, he gives the order to move out.

Ka'lion's restless and ready to go. Ka'lion will not protect the mule or wolf but he has no objection to them coming with the party. Mostly Ka'lion just wants to get going. He doesn't like cities much.

when everyone has their gear all packed away, the gnome realizes he can't carry all his gear. he looks at his new druid friend. "So hear is what i am thinking, i can't carry all of these things i have, pointing to two fully packed backpacks. i don't know how long out there we will be yet i can't pay for a room i am not using to keep things i will need later. Is it possible if you could carry some of my things, they will be useful to have later on. All i ask is that you don't go through it, in less you ask first. Then i don't mind you doing so. In a crisis you have my full permission to go through it to pull anything thing that might be useful. Is this ok with you? Vadania shakes her head as she replies, " Sorry, but I'm already carrying about as much as I can myself. In fact I had to leave some stuff at home because I couldn't carry it and the new weapons I bought. Maybe Navarre's mule can carry it." Turning to the Barbarian, " For that matter, are you really going to carry all that rope with us into to the wilds? You won't have much time to work on it, and the rope will get wet and muddy along with everything else." OOC: Vadania has a low STR and lots of equipment. She's just a couple of pounds away from heavy endurance, which would not be good for her.

Navarre motions toward his pack mule.
The gnome's welcome to store his gear on my pack mule if it's too much for him to carry. Hell, if the little fellow can keep himself useful I may not even charge rent.

With a smile on his face he packs the mule. "Thanks, if there is any traps i'll let you know so that way you don't get hit. since you have my back, know that i will have yours. protection of my things for protection of your life, seams fair to me. Also thought i would never find someone that has some hummer, nice to know one of you does."

"What does rent mean?" asked Ka'lion, pulling the rope pack on his back, picks up his staff, puts his backpack on top of it. Not satisfied, he moves his gear from his backpack and fit's it and ties it to the rope pack carefully. He wraps his hammock around the gear so he wont lose anything. Satisfied He shugs when he realizes his blanket is going to be wet. He dismantles his normal pack and ties it to the larger pack. Puts it on. He struggles to stand. Takes a deep breath and figures he'll need to drop his gear if they get into a fight, but from behind the pack should make a very think shield.

The merchant gleefully accepts Ka'lion's offer of coin and before long the group's two pack mules shuffle out into the rain carrying enough rope to rig a small ship...
The first few hours of the journey are uneventful, but any hope of a peaceful journey are shattered at dusk by renewed rain and a ferocious thunderstorm.
The wolf Ylva slinks along the ground close to Vadina, ears pinned pack as lightning flashes overhead. Nearby Maester Belomme makes a comical sight as he struggles with the mule's reins in one hand and a leather parasol in the other - though he is dry at least.
Suddenly Ylva stops, staring intently ahead. Vadina too senses movement amongst the trees - wolves. She shouts a warning to her companions but is drowned out by a blast of thunder as the animals leap from the trees to attack, covered in scratch marks, eyes wide and red with blood.
4 berserk, slightly chewed up wolves. Roll initiative.
Surprise round - Characters must pass a DC 15 spot or DC20 listen to act in the surprise round. You can take one standard action (including a charge at normal movement speed). Ylva is not surprised. The mule is panicked.

From the text is looks like Vadania isn't surprised either, since she's trying to warn the others. It it possible to use Wild Empathy in this situation to improve the Wolfs disposition? My guess is no, the wolves are already attacking. But since that's the first thing a druid should do when confronted with animals, I thought I should confirm that before attacking them.

Ka'lion drops his backpack, The wolves look sick to Ka'lion, he glances behind him to make sure the party is not surrounded. loads his sling and fires at the closest wolf.insist: [dice=20]+1+4[dice=20]+3, [dice=4]+1
Pathetic, He thinks to himself. The pack may of thrown off his aim. corrected a mistake, but I don't think it matters. I forgot to roll inishiative. [rand=04282917594537139547937920317053890255469060502959697723849676549]

From the text is looks like Vadania isn't surprised either Correct, just roll init for Vadania and Ylva. You can try Wild Empathy but only if you can act before the wolves (unlikely as they are at init 17), and your odds are extremely poor.
Wolves = 17 Nillfree = 4 Harknail = ? Ylva = ? Navarre = ? Ka'lion = Surprised[rand=88884597695247359805521005814555419642625190957442344584683795705]

Vadania Init: [dice=20]+4 =10
Ylva Init: [dice=20]+2=13
With a +4 Init, had a chance to go first, but still needed a good roll. Since the wolves attack first, Vadania's response will depend on the wolves targets, so I'll wait for their action before posting.[rand=2510906488168984738970934599637985294359161518514167190269269049168]

Listen Check at -5 [dice=20], Fail at 13
Spot Check at -5 [dice=20] Fail at -2
Int Roll at +2 [dice=20] for 22.
Navarre is surprised, but he moves before the wolfs on a 22 once combat starts normally.
OOC: I'd like to point out for the sake of argument that the player's handbook describes mules and donkeys and being easy to handle, and steadfast. Hopefully this means it won't run off at the first sing of danger, but.... [rand=9097929857671261703050665557384579590630950406198982256609015167]

Looking at Navarre, the modifier for untrained skills isn't listed. I think it's Wisdom, which gives a modifier of -1, so he still missed both rolls, just not as badly.

Yes spot and listen are wisdom skills. Now I'll miss. How many wolves are attacking us? We may need to work as a team. Wolves are 2 or higher hit dice creatures.

The wolves leap forwards with seemingly little concern for their lives as they attack the largest of the group. The first, a particularly scrawny individual, locks Ka'lion's wrist in it's jaws and thrashes wildly in an attempt to bring the barbarian to the ground. A second bolts past and tears the parasol from Navarre's grasp while it's companion leaps onto the mule's back, tearing at the packs in search of flesh. The fourth and largest of the wolves bowls into Ylva and both animals tumble to the ground, thrashing and biting at each others throats. It is plain to Vadania that this is not normal behavior, these wolves are not hunting, they are berserk. Wolf 1 vs Ka'lion, 7+7=14, Hit, 2+6 = 6 damage - Opposed trip test result 11 Wolf 2 vs Navarre, 1+7 = Fumble, Miss (gets the parasol) Wolf 3 vs Mule, 3+9 = 12, Miss. Wolf 4 vs Ylva, 14+7=21, Hit, 4+4 = 8 damage - Opposed trip test result 7
Ka'lion, 6 damage, test vs 11 to avoid trip Ylva, 8 damage, test vs 7 to avoid trip
Surprise actions (1 standard): Ylva, Vadiania, Nillfree Normal init: Navarre, Wolves, Ylva, Vadania, Ka'lion, Nillfree.[rand=27454868054289548990583049036203904086701886506224329465837280834]

Already labouring under the weight of his pack Ka'lion falls to the ground under the wolf's assault as the creature seeks to press it's advantage.
I've adjusted Ka'lion's position in the init order - you have the improved initiative feat pushing you ahead of Nillfree.
I'd also suggest cleaning up your character's skill table a little - i'm not sure but you appear to have underspent a little - at 2nd level you have 45 skillpoints
