With Matrox out of the shop, or at least, invisibly so since he is in ethereal form, Shay leaps up on the counter to escape the raving Osquips.
Those waiting outside the store see six rats burst through the lower panes of glass in the shopfront, and run off leaping and squeaking in search of the nearest ditch or sewer. More glass shatters and there is even louder squeaking as the Osquips follow. Crom takes the opportunity to boot one on its way, and the small dog sized rat flies easily on top of the building next door, landing out of sight with a thud and loud squeak.
Shay, able to concentrate once more, soothes Old Cud and gets him to calm down. The old man stops hopping about and slapping himself, and becomes more subdued. He cowers behind the counter now, seeming to trust Shay. He looks up from where he is hiding, tears in his eyes, seeming genuinely very afraid.
"Are, they gone?" he asks.
"Does he, want, my soul?" asks Cud, tears streaming down his cheeks now, the old man looks as defenceless as a baby.
Shay tells him the Wizard isn't here for his soul, and then changes the subject.
Old Cud nods slightly, still crying and clutching at his chest as if to protect what's inside of him from anybody trying to take it.
"They wanted my soul!" he implores.
"I know Cud, but they're gone, and it's just you and me now." Shay winks, and Old Cud smiles.
{So long as Shay is able to concentrate on Old Cud, and nobody interferes too much, somebody would be able to slip inside and search the shop now. Shay, you need to keep Old Cud talking, choose your topics carefully.}

...he's gone. Don't worry...
"Does he, want, my soul?" asks Cud, tears streaming down his cheeks now, the old man looks as defenceless as a baby.

Hey, Ol' Cud, why don't you show me around your shop.
Old Cud nods slightly, still crying and clutching at his chest as if to protect what's inside of him from anybody trying to take it.
