Elric-
The priest continues to squint at Elric, his countenance one of crankiness and perhaps suspicion. He listens to Elric’s explanation with an appropriately ‘why should I care?’ demeanor, grunting when the captain finishes. “Caravan guards,” he repeats grumpily. “And I’m, what, just supposed to take your word that he’s a good Christian? That he was devout and ought to be buried with the fine people of my parish?” The priest’s lips twist uncertainly. “Could be a proper, generous donation would show some respect for your friend’s case, could be indeed. And I’d see you and the people of this caravan of yours on the morrow, for services and communion.” He smiles a little. “A show of good faith.”
“An’ you do these deeds, we’ll take the departed and find him a place in the ossuary.”
Arnaud, Rupert, Tawno-
You don’t really know that they didn’t.
Rupert looks and listens in fascination at this piece of juicy gossip, while Arnaud suggests warning the captain—wherever he may be. Last the group heard, he was off trying to find a Christian burial for the slain guardsman. Tawno takes a more involved route, sidling up to the innkeeper for some casual conversation, eventually looking to steer it to the matter of Elric.
The innkeeper talks amiably enough with the pretty gypsy, ready enough to talk about the trouble with bandits—a well known fact—and the trouble with finding reliable entertainers. And paying them. When she mentions the board, he suspects no ulterior motive to her questioning at all. “Oh, aren’t many as can read much o’ them boards anyway,” he agrees. “All o’ them are wanted for something, be it banditry or theft or what-have-you. Rewards are out for ‘em by the nobil’ty, even the Duke hisself sometimes. You see ‘em, best to bring ‘em right to the guards for that reward.” He jabs a finger in the air demonstrably, for emphasis.
All in all, not much in the way of specific information. Though the man does explain that some of the older portraits have been up for years—the guards will take a man anytime. Crimes are not forgot in Freiburg.
The image still hangs there, Elric’s name beneath it in uneven, weak hand-writing. But there all the same. Tawno returns to the others, suggesting that with no word of commotion, perhaps Elric got in without problem. For now.
But unless the four would go out in search of their allies to forewarn them, there’s not much to be done but wait.
Jakob, Amalric, Joseph-
The guard is clearly uncomfortable—perhaps annoyed—to be talking to the magi at all, but he maintains a respectful countenance. He nods gruffly at Joseph’s words, looks like he might be ready to argue on some point, and then shakes his head to fall silent again. He looks to Jakob as he speaks, very obviously more comfortable with the woodsman, and nods easily. “There have been problems with bandits on the roads of late, yes. We’ll take them.” And when Amalric gives the motion for Thomas to set them loose of the wagon for the guards, the man readily does as commanded, and the guards quickly take them.
The peasant-bandit seems disheartened by this. “Surely we will hang,” he says quietly.
The brother is more acidic in his parting words. “By sunrise, no doubt. I told you that bastard was full of it.” They are taken away without resistance.
The guards wave you by, the rest of your goods taken note of and no problems detected. “Go on, then,” the lead guard says. “Don’t make any trouble.”
All except Elric-
Before too long, the wagon rolls up to the inn, and the people of the Covenant are free to take their evening meals inside, or head to their rooms out of the drizzle, or whatever else they wish to do. The remaining guards arrange a cycle of watches for themselves—can’t leave the goods unattended, after all. Thomas and James begin the watch while Helmut tends to the animals, pulling Rupert away for the boy to do his job on this journey.

"It be curious... why the guards stop'd the captain not, at the gates? They must'ave been warned about the wanted."
