Elric-
The priest doesn’t openly say anything about Elric’s derogatory remarks, though by his narrowed eyes, it hasn’t escaped his notice. “I’ll take the donation now, if you please,” the priest says caustically, when it seems Elric will merely be leaving him with the body and then departing. Perhaps he does not trust the captain’s word,
Elric knows that this is, indeed, out of his pocket—the Covenant’s magi don’t cater much to Christianity in general, especially given prevalent church attitudes towards them. A sizable donation takes up a good quantity of his coin, deepening the foul mood, and the priest grunts in what seems like begrudging satisfaction, ringing a bell near the door—no doubt for some poor steward to come and tend to the body. “Service is shortly after dawn. Try to be prompt.” And then he closes the door—harder than he needs to.
Soon enough, a sleepy-eyed young man in plain clothes comes onto the scene. He looks from the soldiers to the body, sighs heavily, and wanders off, returning a minute or two later with a rickety wooden wagon, which he uses to haul off Gregory’s body.
Business here, it seems, is done. Joost shakes his head a little at the whole event and wheels his horse around to head back to find the others. “Any idea what inn they went to?” he asks.
But of course, Elric doesn’t. Yet more searching. Or so he thinks, until Joost points out a conspicuously large bird circling overhead. “Hey,” he says. “Isn’t that the wizard’s hawk?”
All except Elric-
Arnaud asks the innkeeper for the portrait of Elric, to which the man shakes his head. “That stays here. What, you think I can just hand ‘em out to anyone? Guards have a likeness for comparison up at the guardhouse. Just go see them.”
Denied, Arnaud leads the small contingent outside, where the rest of the Covenant’s guards are getting the animals squared away and the wagon’s goods tied down for the night. There, all are brought up to speed on Elric’s wanted status. Amalric responds by sending out Isabeau to search for the captain. Certainly the hawk has the best chance among any to find him, though a straight search of the city could take hours. But Amalric remembers that Elric sought out a place to bury the slain guardsman, and so begins with churches.
It doesn’t take long after that to locate the two men on horseback in Covenant attire, even in the dark, drizzling night. The guard Joost gestures up at the hawk, perhaps recognizing it. But now what? The bird certainly cannot talk to him about the wanted notice.
Back at the inn, the others no doubt hear that the guardsman has not run afoul of the guards—yet. But knowing that the prisoners, who surely recognize Elric, have been taken by the guards is no comfort. As the innkeeper said, the guardhouse is supposed to have its own copies of the wanted portraits. Assuming they are on display.
Wariness may indeed be a wise approach.
[Not sure what Amalric had in mind for the hawk, though it can at least guide the pair back to the inn. Good place for any other reactions.]
