Arnaud, Rupert, Tawno-
Choosing to go to the local taverns and pubs instead of the guardhouse, the trio begin a slow circuit of town, asking gossip, buying drinks, providing entertainment, and generally carousing. Rupert stays attentive and out of the way, while Tawno opens up a table for her trade, hoping to use the art to loosen a guardsman’s lips. She earns a little coin in this time, but it is a negligible sum, enough to make up for buying drinks and greasing palms to find individuals who might know something.
Unfortunately, even with Arnaud’s skilled tongue, Tawno’s comely appearance, and Rupert’s ears, nothing of note comes from the endeavor. Nobody seems acquainted with Elric or his past deeds—or misdeeds—but that isn’t to say there aren’t any out and about. Mercenary folk seem common enough, among them bounty-hunters, but nobody knows of anyone specifically targeting the young captain.
Tawno does manage to hear some general information from the guardsman she lures to her table, discovering that the bounties are for criminals of any sort, be they bandits, traitors, thieves, or whatever. His words also lead the gypsy to discover that Elric’s must be an old bounty, simply by the weathered look of the portrait and its high place on the wall. Indeed, there are other crude likenesses, many not quite the same as the original seen by the group, located in other taverns and inns throughout the town. Unofficial warrant boards, it seems. Elric’s portrait isn’t always there, nor indeed are some of the others.
Finally, it is late enough in the night that the most prudent course of action leads the trio back to the inn with the others, to rest for the night. Nothing more can be discovered for now, with the night deepening and travelers and townspeople retiring to their beds.
Elric, Amalric, Joseph, Jakob-
Joost shrugs at Elric’s explanation. “We all have a past,” he says simply, and leaves it at that, his thoughts on the matter unclear. He does keep a wary eye out for guards, though.
Elric and Joost arrive at the inn with Isabeau’s guidance, easily avoiding any guards patrols. There the scene is still calm, and Joost soon joins his fellows in guard rotation and in hunting down some food. Thomas wisely suggests that Elric stay out of the main room, lest his visage be recognized, which would leave him out by the cart or in the stables, vying with the steady rain and cool night air. [If Elric refuses and goes inside to get a room, let me know.]
The rest of the night is routine aside from this. The magi are served with the usual contemptuous looks and sneers, but no incident comes of it, though the absence of Arnaud and Tawno, more sociable than any in the Covenant, is certainly noticed. It’s a good thing most of the details have already been tended to before their arrival.
[Nothing more to report here, unless someone wants to do something particular.]
All-
As mornings dawns, the rain finally lets up, and the clouds quickly slip away, leaving the area humid and due to heat up swiftly. But for now it is still pleasantly cool. Joost and Helmut yawn grumpily, watching the wagon for this morning shift, assuring with a nod that the goods did not suffer theft or other problems.
The inn serves a cold porridge for breakfast, with some milk or butter at extra charge. Simple fare, but serviceable. [Spot checks.] Stepping into the main room, Amalric’s keen eyes immediately notice that something is amiss—the portrait of Elric’s likeness is gone.
