Havarros looks around the table, eyeing everyone in turn. He settles on Thorin first.
"Aye...you would know much of Dwarven honor. I let this get the best of me at times." He swallows his pride for a moment, recanting the tale of woe you've all heard before. "Was just last year I lost my brother...and I'll never forget the sight...."
"We had come to a ruined city deep in the Old World. I'd give you specifics but as you know, nothing works as it should in the Old World...the stars aren't right, the moon seems...off...that damned fog will spin you around and muck you up. I can't tell you where the ruins were, but I can tell you they were dominated by four massive towers, each topped by a spire with an brazier twice as large as any man. Centered in this was a stone dais where I found the sphere. We scouted around the towers, but we never saw the spider beast approach. It descended on us from the towers, seemingly crawling out of the night sky itself - like the stars yawned and spewed forth this devil. Two of us were dead before we could even see what was attacking, by the time we had our wits about us, another two were down and my brother was pinned under its acid-dripping jaws..."
Havarros steels himself, the memory painfully flooding his mind. "He threw the sphere to me, and told me to run....I promised I'd come back for him....but I never did. I never will." He rubs his limp arm at his side.
A group of rowdy humans in the corner interrupts the moment with a hasty toast to their success tomorrow. Havarros snaps out of his stupor.
"I'll wait here for you until you return...should you ever return. I'll give you a few months, beyond that you know you can find me at my home." The roar of the Inn rises louder, oxymoronic to the dying conversation with Havarros.
"What else can I tell you about the Old World before you leave? This may be your last chance..."
Yakumo - The cameo is about 2 inches long, about the size of a modern day brooch.

Richard looked at the hooded figure, "So Wit, decided to join us? Promise of a quick gold piece entice you or did you get into trouble again?" Richard had known Wit for a while, he had pulled a simple B&E with the tiefling when things were particularly grim money wise. But generally Richard just unloaded the goods that Wit had come across during his own jobs. He liked the tiefling well enough, Wit never gave him much trouble, but it seems that trouble and high tempers have a way of finding Wit. "Nice guy, never got a fair shake" thought Richard.
Richard listened to the story once again making mental notes before speaking up, "Well Havarros, what else did you see in the Old World? I can't imagine it was a completely peaceful journey. How long did you travel before you reached the ruins? Did you see any other landmarks? What about other people in the Old World?"

(Whew. Can I make an untrained History check (or whatever you deem appropriate) to understand why the obsidian spheres are so prized? (NBK0rVOtp_3-22, includes Int bonus))

Havarros eyes Richard, his eyes filling again with memories.
"I spent four months in the Old World - a lifetime if you ask anyone who's been over there. We saw much, much I've tried to forget. Each day we passed a new and strange monument, spire, open field or dense forest. Each day we would rise and what we had just come through seemed to be lost to the fog...or it wouldn't be where it was the night before. One day we would be walking towards a ruined city, the next morning the city was gone and replaced by seemingly endless fields of strange blue flowers. One afternoon a tower would poke out of the hazy horizon, by dawn that tower would simply be a tall tree in a dense forest."
"That is why none can give you exact directions to things in the Old World - whether they shift or the Old World simply spins your head about, you only find what the Old World wants you to discover."
"I will warn you of this." Havarros takes a sip. "We never found anyone in the Old World that wasn't out for blood. Reptilian warriors, desert beetles, walking plants of the forest...even those that eked out existence in the ruins eventually revealed themselves to be turncoats out for blood. Hell, I remember an old man we found that claimed to be from the New World and was managing to exist in the Old...he tried to run us into a cave which was certainly a trap! We gave him a good cutting and left him on the threshold of his precious 'cave'..."
"Trust no one in the Old World...no one."
Wit - History Check Results - The Obsidian Spheres are prized not so much for their construction or powers, but because of what they represent. They are a trophy that one has been to the Old World...and more importantly survived. They are not commonplace in the Old World and usually they are guarded or trapped in some fashion so even if discovered, they are hard to retrieve - as you've hard first hand from Havarros' account. When it was discovered there was more than one such Sphere for the taking in the Old World, they were unanimously received as the defacto trophy for those brave enough and skilled enough to return with one. As time passed and more counts of how Obsidian Spheres were retrieved, they became more popular. More and more accolades were piled onto those that could find them and now they are well received by any race and walk of life for there are few that do not know of their origin.
They are about 4 inches in diameter, completely smooth and devoid of markings - and impossible to duplicate. It's easy to see why they became trophies.
Of course, there are those schools of thought that believe the Obsidian Spheres may not be as innocuous as they appear...

Bishop speaks up, hearing something of note in the dwarfs memories, "what can you tell us about the reptilian warriors? Did they appear to be organised or roaming bands, did they appear to be capable of navigating the old world?"

Bishop speaks up, hearing something of note in the dwarfs memories, "what can you tell us about the reptilian warriors? Did they appear to be organised or roaming bands, did they appear to be capable of navigating the old world?"Havarros shrugs, "We only encountered a handful of those buggers, but that was enough. They are vicious, blood thirsty and they will fight to the death. The clan that we encountered was certainly organized. ...at least within their group. ..and they for sure knew the terrain of the Old World. Those we didn't kill in the first skirmish followed us unseen for days. They knew the lay of the land, that they did."
If there's nothing else anyone has to ask or wants to purchase or investigate, tomorrow we'll venture into the Old World.

Thorin asks, "How about food? How hard is it to find food and water over there?" While Thorn has a good stock of rations, it still won't last him a month.

[OOC: That's a good question, I assumed it was a little hard to come by so I went a little buckwild buying food, but it can't hurt to have more. Especially if the landscape is particularly strange, perhaps survival skill won't be so easy to get a comfortable amount of food.]

This was not good. Wit was a...well, whatever he was, he needed people to work. Not spider-beasts.
And yet. A sphere. Here.. Not some overoptimistic group hoping to blindly stumble across one, probably trapped. No, all they needed to do was find some old bones.
There are bets you take, and bets you don't take. This was one you didn't take---unless you had to.
I'm gonna need some more rations.
