From the Historical Reserve, Midgate Royal Library
"...although previous treatments (Coldquill, 968) have advanced many possible causes, I am a tentative proponent of the Eldritch Virus theory. The Pre-Exodus civilization was undoubtedly extremely advanced in the arcane arts, but this may have been their downfall. Oral histories speak of a 'hole torn in magic,' through which an intelligence alien to us reached into the minds of arcane spellcasters whenever they cast a spell, and then spread through mere conversation throughout their neighbors. While fantastic, this theory explains both the speed and the total nature of the fall of Pre-Exodus civilization. That our spellcasters today fail to achieve the great heights attained in the Old World is possible support for this theory."
Wit shivered, and closed the book.
