You check the doors, they do re-seal and re-open with the key you found in the pile of ash. Without the key, the doors are immoveable and seemingly impenetrable. If you wish it, the doors will firmly and safely lock at your command, and re-open all the same.
Wit is the first to make his way upstairs. Leaving the clean antechamber downstairs, the room upstairs is a thing of wonder. The bright crystals continue here, permeating the room with light. Immediately noticeable is a strange conical barrel of sorts gently rolling across the stone floor. One side of it has been painted to mimic a face, large bright eyes and a faux, grinning smile of white teeth. Extending from two sides are flimsy, makeshift arms of copper and silver tone tubing. The barrel automaton rumbles this way and that, softly colliding with the wall...then turning and continuing to rumble about in a different direction. The soft monotone music emanates from the barrel-thing, again a pleasant melody of notes arranged and produced on some metallic drum inside it's body.
Aside from the squeaky wheeled automaton, the room has more interesting things to offer. The stairs continue on the far side of the room, again rising upwards. There are two tables at the ends of the room between the staircases, littered with all manner of tools, bits, odd and ends...and bits of parchments; scribbles of engineering drawings in charcoal. In the center of the room is a larger table, again littered with strange bits of...well....everything. There is a large bookcase near the stairs up, leather bound tomes tightly packed between the oak walls of the case. From the ceiling dangle bits of string ending in little gizmos and scraps of parchment. The whole scene draws you in completely, you could spend a year in this place and never see the same thing twice...
More light comes from the next staircase up, with the banging steel barrel thing it's hard to hear anything else from this vantage - but you're certain the tower has much more oddity to offer...
