Freetime gone; thanks Nintendo!

As the title indicates thanks to the Wii and the latest game to hit the shelves my evening freetime (what little was left) is going to be gone.

Super Smash Bros Brawl is officially out boys and girls. I know some of you have Wiis and this has got to be the best game to hit the console in some time.

It's a new and improved version of the classic Super Smash Bros for the N64 and Super Smash Bros Melee for the Gamecube. KMan and I were addicted to the original version way back when, and have been eagerly anticipating this release.

Needless to say, when it came out yesterday KMan got his reserved copy and managed to find another non reserved copy for me. We then proceeded to log about four hours of game time yesterday.

Holy hell is this game crazy. We used to be real pros, effortlessly putting down all competition, but now we're back to square one noobs and get our fair share of wholloping.

From an official game review standpoint I've got to say that this game is easily a 9 of ten on my scale of awesome games. I'm having a little trouble with the control scheme; they offer four controller options though and I've only really tried one. The graphics are great; the musical scores great; the character selection is good, with probably ten unlockable characters in addition to the 20 or so stock ones. There's a metric ton of other unlockables from additional stages and music tracks, to trophies and stickers that can help you powerup in one player mode.

One of the best things to come out of the new game (though we haven't tried it yet) is over the net gameplay. It allows KMan and I to link upfrom our own livingrooms and fight co-op or all out brawl against other friends or strangers from all over the country (and globe?). I hope that the UK boys see this and get hooked; then maybe we can connect and have a little rumble. I say maybe, because I'm not convinced that they'll let us chat around the globe.

Yah, so this may not be the most KMans related topic, but it does harken back to our days of movie and video game reviews. So for anyone interested in brawling with people like Mario, Princess Peach, Sonic the Hedgehog, Samus Aran, Donkey Kong, Snake, Pikachu and many many more, Super Smash Bros Brawl is the game for you.

He's right on all accounts. The game offers much for those that have waited and doesn't disappoint at all. Tons of characters, levels, music, items and unlockables. I found the nunchuk + Wiimote scheme a little hard to control, but it offers classic controller and Gamecube controller support as well, so I might just try one of those next time.

I can't say enough good things about this game...but frankly I'm scared because I still owe Shakes an Aristocrats review from like, three years ago so I can't write too much.

Go buy it. Now.

My son has been trying everything in his mind to get me to buy him this game. He's even tried dares, such as "I'll sleep in the dog house with Laney (our Yorkshire Terrier) and Rowdy (our Terrier mix mutt) all night!" Yeah, he's tried all inventive things, but me and the wife already know we are going to buy it for him, just not sure when. Apparently, his friend already has his copy, so you know the peer pressure is on...

So, it looks like sooner better than later? Although, with his mental capability with games, he would spend hours on it, with as many cheat codes as he can find.... there go the chores!!!

In other news I played for two (was it three? ) hours last night. I've begun unlocking characters and such on my game. I also tried out the story mode, which was kind of weird.

I tried two other control styles also, and I honestly think that I'm leaning toward just using the wiimote alone (sideways like). I seemed to have the most luck with that, though I'm not exactly sold yet.

More time behind the proverbial joystick will settle the matter though. Oh darn, I have to play more SSB Brawl. <sigh>

My landlord is a little psycho, and it's included in my tenant's contract that we can't have a TV in the house (it's a little duplex). Like I said, a little psycho. So it's impossible for SSBBrawl to ever make its way into my domicile, but my friend came down from Utah State last weekend and brought his Wii and a copy of the game, and MAN! Weekend. Gone. I think I exploded from too much awesome.

lol, sorry to hear that Fangor. Though since your arms aren't broken I'm sure you remember how to do them yourself.

That's one thing I never understood about parents; it's like the moment they had kids of an appropriate age for chores, they forgot how to do them. Sure it's supposed to teach "responsibility" but it really only teaches us that someone higher up the chain will always be in your grill about something they could do themselves if they weren't so lazy. I guess they're getting us ready for the work force then. Consider that if all such figures spent a half of that energy on doing it themselves instead of griping at others to do it, the world would be a better place.

Personally, SSB Brawl rules and I will neglect portions of my "honey do" list if it suits me to do so. Now THAT'S responsibility. Knowing which work you can blow off for later.

I thought the whole point of having kids was slave labor. Did this somehow change without my noticing?

On a more practical note, kids take up time and resources in their own right. Aegea and I are already struggling to keep up on chores with just two of us, so I can only imagine how having a child would make that even more difficult. So yeah, I'm all in favor of them stepping up and contributing to the household.

Mostly, though, I just never want kids. I have numerous nieces and nephews, and they already test the limits of my tolerance. Dealing with that 24/7 would lead me to insanity rivaled only by Azathoth himself. *shudders*

It's not that we have the child labor going strong in our house, it's that this kid consumes games like food. Figure this: Nintendo Wii, Gamecube, PS2, Nintendo DS, TurboScan and games galore for all of them. Now, do the math... you think he should at least earn some of those funds that we manage to scrape together to buy him that stuff? (Although admittedly, we dont buy him all that stuff, that's what grandparents are for... but we still get him games galore... He just doesn't take care of the stuff... losing old systems like the other little handheld games, before the DS... two of them... and games get lost all the time with him... And who does he ask to replace them...)

Besides, his responsibilty is not bad at all. Yard duty once a week, which is only pick up trash, no mowing or hard labor. Feed the animals a few times a week when he asks to do so. Clean his room, do his homework. Pretty simple, if you ask me. It's the pulling him away from the games that is hard. He's a kid that is prone to diabetes from his granparents side of the family, and obesity as well. So, part of his chores: 30 minutes of playing outside. Either with the dogs, with Haley, our 5 year old daughter, or simply jumping on the trampoline. Damn, I wish I was a kid again....

Yah, simpler times for sure. Though with the way that public schools are going these days I dont' think I'd want to get educated again. They're really messing with some things that they shouldn't, like recess. Though they'll still complain about childhood obescety. Jerks.

But it doesn't sound like your kids have it so bad; though you should know that it's not easy to walk away from a game if you're really enjoying yourself. You used to play; you know what its like.

The article tells that Nintendo doens't have enough bandwidth to handle the SSB traffic. Further it says that 874,000 copies were sold on launch day alone; that's risen to 1.4 million copies in the first week. They're saying that it's the fastest selling Nintendo game in history.

Unlockable Target Tests
By clearing various difficulties of Classic, you can unlock different levels of Target Test as outlined below. Note that if you unlock a higher difficulty level before an lower one, you will unlock all the ones before it e.g. If you clear Classic mode once on Intense, you will unlock all the target tests.

If you play any kind of Brawl on the "Smashville" Animal Crossing stage when your Wii's internal clock is set to a Saturday between the hours of 8:00 PM and midnight, K.K. "Totakeke" Slider will appear in the background of the stage and serenade your brawl.

Secrets
Easy CD and Sticker Drops
First, acquire Stage Builder Parts Set B (Make 5 custom stages). Make a level where there are conveyor belts running into a wall, and a platform somewhere in the level that a player can stand on and stay there.

Plug in a second controller. Go into options, and set every item EXCEPT Sandbag off. Set items to high. Go into your conveyor-belt-level in a regular Brawl and have the second character jump and stay on the platform, so it's not in the way.

Now, when the Sandbags fall, they'll stay at the wall. Use your character (Kirby's basic A attack, repeatedly, recommended or another character that can hit many times quickly.) to hit the Sandbags over and over. Since all other items are turned off, only stickers and CDs will appear. This is the easiest way to get a lot of CDs/Stickers quickly.

Fight Crazy Hand in Classic Mode.
To fight Crazy Hand in Classic, you must reach the Master Hand in under nine minutes and without using any continues. Also, it must be completed on Hard mode or higher. If these conditions are met, Crazy Hand will appear alongside Master Hand at the start of the match.

Selecting Zero Suit Samus
To use Zero Suit Samus at the start of a match, select Samus on the character screen and hold the following button before the match starts with the corresponding controller that is being used:

Gamecube/Classic controller: Hold the R button
Wii Remote with Nunchuk: Hold the Z button
Wii Remote: Hold the Minus (-) button

Note that this also works with stages like Mushroomy Kingdom.

Well, this game still owns a few evenings and some late hours (like staying up till 1am to play). I've played the hell outta this thing for weeks now. As of Saturday KMan came over and we played a little and were successful in gathering every character available.

And still there are a ton of other things to play and unlock. It's pretty crazy. I don't know that I'll ever get it all.

I wish I could say I was still alive, but the answer to that is barely. I am here, though school, new work and fiance are indeed all holding me hostage. In an effort to save my brain, I'm using what little free time I get to play the Wii. I'm trying to update, but I know they are coming super slow...

I know how it goes, as I am now transferred to a new office, with at least 1 hour drive to work now, where I was able to work from home for the last 2 or so years.
