[This poem was written for the soldiers in Iraq, in memory for all who lost a family member stateside during the deployment. Dedicated to the father of SPC Amanda Rosales, 362nd QM BN.]
A Desert Memorial
Youth and carefree wiles Both fade with the passing of years
Where future is an abstract word And forever is the course of everyone's lives
I looked at you, and saw a flame of wonder Something nothing could ever destroy
I was wrong...
Your fire's been stolen Quenched by a flood of stolen memories
You drown, alone, abandoned by your fellow And cannot understand their apathy
But you are not alone...
We are always here for you To calm the waters, or at least teach you to ride them
Instead of an overwhelming force, The wrath of emotions becomes an inspiration
And in the desert, a flood can't last forever.
