Primarily for those that have chipped in money, as we all KNOW we will be playing.
I'm thinkin' we should do a little planning for our group, as opposed to just stabbing in the dark. We'll be with these characters a loooong time, so let's make sure we're happy with the group balance from the start, neh?
Unless KMan has a problem with us doing this, ofcourse.
I think we should start by figuring out what people WANT to play, and then see if there's anything missing. Good? Good.
I'll, err, let someone else start, since I'm not sure what I wanna do just yet.
And again, this is for people that chipped in, since we all know we'll be playing and have approval to create characters without PMing KMan about 'em. Could be useful for those applying, ofcourse, so they know what's covered.

I'm pretty sure we start at level 1, so I don't think alternate races will even be feasible.

Personally, I think that we need to know the character creation rules. He said that characters that need light may be hard pressed to move in this dungeon. Based upon teh basic character races, that leaves Dwarves and Half Orcs. Are there any alternates we can use? Are we using standard classes? How about starting gold or items? All of these things would be invaluable in knowing what sort of party to create.

*Steps in with a voice not unlike James Earl Jones*
Character creation - Any race is allowed, but you will be starting at level 1 so it may be a hinderance. I.E. - Say someone wanted to play a tiefling, they could, they would simply start as a 1st level tiefling with no 'core' class skills. They would get one feat, d8 HP, and some basic skills at 2+INT Mod. Then, once the ECL for that race has been reached, (In the case of the tiefling 2 I believe) they could start taking class levels in whatever they desired. Nothing is off limits, of course relating back to the same rule of I only allow Wizards produced products. If I don't have the book, I'll accept PDFs or Scans.

So.. a large choice. I'm not in the game, but anyway. It could be interesting to see a vast variety of culture in this game. Their is so many thing that the character could came from. Some creatures returning from a mission, other that has been expulsed and seek revenge from other in the dungeon. Goodies that heard of evil in it and come to destroy it. A creature that had trouble with monster in the dungeon and come inside to end this.. I didn't read the background yet.. Or simply some adventurer or merchand that were traveling and decided to stay there a night.. Dunno.. I've never seen people play drow, yet in any campaing. Ok, there is in one in The marionette of the demon.. but I don't follow this game. Could be interesting to see one.. If there is angels in it, someone could play a celestial with relation in it.. same for demon.. Only some suggestion

For basics, I fully plan on being a female gnomic bard. She'll end up with, some uh, special qualities before I'm done, but there's your framework.

Well, do we know how many will be in this party? We can go two roads:
1. The safe, tried-and-true method of fighter/cleric/rogue/wizard/bard.
2. An absolutely crazy party makeup. The Fallen is a good example. A psion, a sorceror, a druid, two wizards, and one fighter? A party that relies on a druid for ALL its healing and as a secondary combatant is...well...unique, in any case. Of course, there's the other extreme---BOYD. I think we have maybe 3/12 characters w/o full BAB progression.
Some thoughts:
1. Light (or continual light) will be essential. Fortunately, it's really not that hard a base to cover. Heck, even dancing lights, which Sonnet's character will have, will do in a pinch.
2. As this is a static campaign, rather than a dynamic campaign, wizards will probably outshine sorcerors.
3. Teleport will be worth the page's weight in gold. A lot more than that, actually. (Funny...I guess every spell is worth more than it's weight in gold.) The point is, it's a nice, easy spell for leaving when necessary. Admittedly, it's a 5th level spell, and won't be available until 9th level, but then, this IS the "adventure of two lifetimes."
Anyway, those are my thoughts. If we're going for party makeup #1, I might want to try my hand at a fighter. Otherwise...oh man, I'd LOVE to try out the spellsword from CW...

Kay, the character's up. I'm a xeph bard, and I'm warning you guys, guard your gear. She's an extremely, uh, fun-loving and playful character... (read practical jokester)

You sure about that Wiz? Remember...this was a dungeon built to house demons and devils..prisoners that the Celestials know can teleport at will. Just keep that in mind.

I'm looking at playing a Drow or Half-Drow type at the moment. Still unsure. Class will probably be Ranger or a combination of Ranger and Fighter. Quick warriors type.

Well, I jumped the gun without reading this thread and already am set in my character. So far, there is a Rogue heavily slanted towards scouting and technical (no social skills to speak of) and a Bard which gives some social skills, the all powerful 'Use Magic Device' and a variety of useful abilities in various areas.
Both of them have darkvision, so if EVERYONE has darkvision, light will be no problem. Just a thought.
I like the wierd party idea. So far with no 20' movers and good dex (which equals good ini and ranged attacks) a mobile party looks good. Focus on pounding single opponents at a time, running away, setting traps and ambushes and raining ranged death if the opponents try a closed formation.
Just an idea. I really don't think party make-up matters that much, usually the skills are there for improvising if you think and work together no matter what you take. Even if its like, say, five wizards against golems you can always just cast expedious retreat, run away and think up a plan to avoid them. Its always most important to play what you want. I've played a party of three thieves and a fighter and it beat down anything it saw, most fun party I've ever been in, mainly because all the thieveswere COMPLETELY different from one another. A real "low class" group of people, much more fun than snooty, self-important adventurers.

I think everyone should play whatever he wants without connection for the light problems etc. cause whats the point? how can your character know that is dark there?
