(OOC) For sake of ease, we’ll say the police inquiries and the lecture run about the same length of time. The group from 410 will arrive at Schuyler Hall just as the others are finishing up with Cowles.
Room 410
After hearing Jeremy’s statement, Lt. Poole takes one of the other officers aside, showing him his notepad before he tucks it away. “Keep your eyes peeled for a card of some kind with this name scrawled on the back. It could be important.”
When you are departing, Lt. Poole bids you goodbye. “Your cooperation is appreciated. We’ll contact you if we have anything else.” And then you take your leave. [In case it’s not obvious, the Lieutenant will take information to contact all of you – excepting Jeremy, who has neither home nor telephone.]
When you are outside, Sam raises the question of where to go next, suggesting the lecture the others have been attending. With no other ideas, the four of you head that way, hoping the academics have discovered something useful. [Taking a cab, or whatever car you came in.]
NYU Schuyler Hall
[Sure Japic, I’ll do another Thurman for you.]
As Cowles continues to talk, Thurman and Rebecca begin to feel less and less certain about this lead. These bat cults, aside from being cults, appear to have nothing to do with Elias’s subject matter, the Carlyle Expedition. But then why would Elias have the bulletin? Perhaps Australia wasn’t as important as originally thought...
Rebecca and Jackhammer seem content to let Cowles ramble. Even if his information appears to have no relevance right now, one never knows what the future will reveal. And besides, it couldn’t hurt to indulge an enthusiastic professor who clearly has trouble finding an audience on his own.
But Thurman, thinking on the matter, decides to try a couple more questions. “This bat cult – some of its characteristics seem familiar. Would it be possible it’s spread elsewhere around the globe? Perhaps to Africa, for instance?” It was a bold leap, but posing the assumption might reveal something.
Cowles seems to consider this. “I suppose it’s certainly possible, but I can’t say for certain. Cults in general seem to have certain things in common – use of fear, similar hierarchies, using death to feel powerful. Unfortunately, Australia and Polynesia are my specialties, so I can’t say for certain. This bat cult was rumored to have spread all across the pacific, though, so beyond... well, I’d say it’s certainly a possibility.”
It appears Cowles knows no more about African cults than you do. After a bit more conversation, Cowles agreeably leaves his address with you, eagerly anticipating your next visit. As Thurman and Rebecca conjectured, the professor is staying in Arkham, near Miskatonic University, though he makes it clear that he will only be there for the next six months or so, after which he will be returning to Sydney.
After another rambling goodbye, you take your leave, just as the others are turning up from their encounter with the police...
Just Outside Schuyler Hall, Near 11 PM
Once again, all seven of you are together, with one less lead than before. There is still a confusing array of information, with only a few apparent links to the Carlyle Expedition Elias spoke of. There is the letter from Faraz Najir, the letter from Miriam Atwright, the two business cards from Emerson Imports and the Penhew Foundation, the photograph of Chinese ships, and the empty matchbook from Shanghai – not to mention the unfamiliar symbol that was carved on Elias’s head.
And surely beyond these obvious leads, there are other, less clear ones. Who might know what Elias was up to? Who would know, for that matter, what Carlyle was up to?
So many questions. But most, it is likely, will have to wait for tomorrow.
[Please discuss your findings and plan your next course of action.]
