[I’m going to assume Jackhammer made a warning, too. Though to be fair, I missed Thurman’s Spot/Listen checks. He succeeds at both.]
Noting the man coming around the corner, all of you quickly make efforts to be hidden – or at least inconspicuous. Jeremy charges off for some nearby stacks of pallets to hide behind, being a bit too far from the trucks at present. [Hide/Sneak checks.] He moves as quietly as a cat, but in trying to find a hiding place, Jeremy misjudges where the man is coming from, and flattens himself against an exposed side of the stack. It is too late to find better cover. [Behold a critical fumble. Sorry, man.] Still, it is dark, and perhaps the man won’t notice...
Tommy, Jackhammer, [I’m assuming] Joe Average, and Sam all head for hiding places across the street, putting the alleys and overhangs to good use. [Hide checks: Sam (63), fail; Tommy (90), fail. Joe (78), fail. Jackhammer (4), critical success.] Surprisingly, it is the large prizefighter that does the best job of blending into the dark surroundings, flattening himself against the corner of one building. Sam attempts to look like an inconspicuous hobo, Joe ducks behind a pay phone booth, and Tommy ducks just inside of an alley. [None of you know you are poorly-concealed, of course.]
Thurman, meanwhile, chooses a different tactic. Grabbing Miss Devereux, he begins to walk arm-in-arm with her, both of them behaving as if they were a loving couple out for an evening stroll. [Hm. I’m going to call this a Persuade roll. Penalty for being out in the working district in the middle of the night . Rebecca succeeds (by a ton), Thurman fails.] Although Dr. Osgood’s acting skills aren’t exactly up to par, Rebecca more than makes up for any failing on his part, acting the part of a doting lover with impressive enthusiasm and believability. If Thurman hadn’t come up with the plan, he might be fooled himself.
It is about that moment when the guard rounds the corner. His flashlight glances over Thurman and Rebecca, obviously hearing their voices, and seems to linger on them for a moment in scrutiny. The pair cannot see the man’s face, but one can imagine his curious expression. “What’s this?” the man says after a time, walking to the edge of the fence. “Awful late for a walk, isn’t it, folks?”
It would seem Jeremy has escaped notice for the moment. But if the man shifts his attention from the happy couple, he will surely be spotted. [Another Sneak/Hide may be in order.]
