Rebecca, Thurman-
[Credit Rating check for Rebecca.] As Rebecca speaks to the guard, he lowers his flashlight a bit, so as not to blind the pair. Getting a glance at his face, both Thurman and Rebecca instantly notice that this man is Caucasian, a bit squat and square of shoulders, with a light coating of stubble over his face. He is, it occurs to both, quite different from the large Africans that murdered Elias and the sickly Caucasian with them.
He looks like the sort of individual you’d expect to find guarding a warehouse a block or two from the harbor.
At her words, he scratches the back of his neck a little, uncomfortably. “Ah, no, Miss. If’n you wanna take a walk, you can take a walk wherever you like – on that side of the fence, anyway.” He seems, perhaps, a little flustered by close proximity with an upper class, attractive woman. “Just a little queer, is all.”
Looking at the building, Thurman only notices the address, as listed on the business card. It is otherwise a rather featureless warehouse – which isn’t all that odd really. Asking what sort of business it is, the guard shrugs. “Imports,” he says, as if that completely explains everything.
Asked further about what specifically is imported, or other details about the business, the guard shakes his head. “Can’t say as I know – I just do the night watch. Mr. Emerson brings in all kinds of cargo, I expect. You’d have to ask him during the day if you want to know more.” As opposed to being bored, the guard seems more eager to get out of the chilly January night. However, he does seem to possess a limited degree of manners, and is unwilling to come across too impolitely.
The sound of a quick scuff comes from one side, and the guard flashes his light over in that direction. “Hold on... did you hear something?” he asks absently. He shines his light over the area for a moment and you hold your breath, thinking he will spot Jeremy... but then the light swings back and the guard merely shakes his head. “Nevermind. Probably just a stray.”
[Any other ideas for dragging out the conversation?]
Jeremy-
With Thurman and Rebecca running a successful distraction, Jeremy tries to creep to a better hiding spot. [Sneak check: 82, fail.] But moving through the darkness, Jeremy’s clothing catches on a stray nail sticking out of one pallet, making a little tearing sound. It is enough to catch the guard’s attention, and he looks over in Jeremy’s direction. With the light incoming, Jeremy tries to find some sort of cover to hide behind, but there is very little for him – all he can do is lay flat, and hope his ragged clothes blend in with the ground. [Hide check: 75, also a failure. Spot check for the guard: 98, critical fumble.] But the guard shines his light high, looking for a person, and so completely overlooks Jeremy. In a moment or two, the light is gone, back over to the happy couple.
Having another close call, Jeremy finally finds he has the chance to slip over to the other side of the building, away from the guard’s field of vision, where he can crouch near one of the trucks – or investigate them. As he creeps around the corner, he also notes the large doors for the loading dock, along with a smaller, man-sized door. Another entrance.
Tommy, Sam, Joe, Joe-
[No need for additional Hide checks – what you’ve got is what you’re stuck with, for now.]
Crouched, standing, or otherwise lurking the best that they know how, the other four members of the investigative team lie in wait, able to hear and see to some limited extent what is transpiring nearby. In the dark, they can make out Thurman and Rebecca talking politely and cheerfully with the warehouse guard, who seems uncertain how to deal with people – respectable people – talking with him in the middle of the night. The four can even make out some of Jeremy’s movements, which aren’t nearly as graceful as his usual acts, though they are too far away to really see him. When the guard’s light flashes over in Jeremy direction, it almost seems as if the man will be caught – but by some miracle, the guard completely overlooks him.
He seems to find no cause to investigate the opposite side of the road, at present, merely dealing with the pair in front of him. It might be possible to sneak away and come upon the building from another street, out of the guard’s sight – depending on how long Rebecca and Thurman can keep up a distraction, that is.
[Not a lot for you guys to do, at present, unless you’d like to try something daring. Sneak checks if you want to swing around and come back at another side of the warehouse.]
