Tommy, Jeremy, Jack-
[Tommy needs to lose 5 at once to hit Temp Insanity, or his POW in sanity within a game hour. Joe, however, does go temporarily insane. His actions as posted are fine, however – his insanity is to flee.
Jackhammer – I have your Current Sanity at 38, not 39. I believe you lost one back at Elias’s murder scene.]
As you look in horror at the scene before you – the dead walking, wailing, inhuman cries from the pit – you feel panic rise within you. Tommy and Joe, both wise and experienced enough to comprehend the sight before them, find themselves frozen in fear. But Jeremy, the peculiar man without sense to truly comprehend what he faces, knows only that something horrible threatens his friend Samuel. Seizing Tommy’s gun, he turns it on the priest, knowing that if he reaches to harm his friend, he must fire.
The priest focuses first on the girl. Seizing her by the back of the head, he reaches forward with his clawed finger and cuts on her flesh. You hear her cries, but the pain is certainly not so great as what awaits her. When he is finished, her head whips to one side, and you can clearly make out what was marked on her forehead – it is the same symbol as seen on Jackson Elias’s forehead, the night of his murder.
The priest turns to the crowd and the drums and chanting begin again. With some powerful, unfamiliar words, the priest then grabs the woman again and hurls her into the pit, where her cries mingle with those of the horror that waits below… it is truly a horrific sound.
He turns to Samuel, next, prepared to do the same. But as he reaches forward to mark his forehead, Jeremy’s grim intent surfaces, and he fires on the man. [Handgun: 69, pass.] Sure enough, his years of practice land a heavy shot on the priest’s collar, dangerously close to his neck. [5 damage.] But it falls short of Jeremy’s target: his head. The man in the feathered robe staggers for a moment, and suddenly the chanting and drums fall silent – the gun’s blast echoes in this stony chamber, and all eyes fall on the trio of men staring from the doorway.
Samuel, too, sees his friend – and for all the fear he showed before, it doubles upon recognizing him. “You fool! Run!”
Grabbing his bleeding shoulder with one hand, the massive priest scowls and points a clawed finger towards Jeremy and the others, giving a direct, short, guttural command – it can only have on purpose.
As one, you turn and flee to the stairs, knowing that the horde of cultists will be on your feet – the living dead as their vanguard. Every step is torture, and with each moment you feel your heart pounding in your ears, the screams from that horrible chamber echoing in your heads. You curse each moment you slip on the narrow and uneven stairs, but you erupt from them ahead of the cultists. For a moment or two, you stumble through the darkened Ju-Ju House, each shadow and shape on the walls now ten times more frightening than when you entered, but eventually you find the exit. You stumble into the cold, brisk January night, relieved to feel it again.
But the pounding of feet is still behind you. You cannot stop – always forward, always running.
Eyes peers at you from the windows surrounding Ransom Court, but you ignore them. You run and you run until you are out of that dingy court, past the darkened, narrow alley, all the way to the public streets where, you hope, you will be safe.
And you are right. Legions of naked cultists will not follow you this far, and even the shambling dead men seem to have been ordered back, away from where their unnatural state might cause conspicuous alarm. You are safe – for now.
[As long as you don’t dally for any strange reason, it will be easy enough to escape to a public street, where dozens of naked cultists will be reluctant to pursue you. But you have undoubtedly been seen.]
Sam, Rebecca, Thurman, Joe-
[The time for reading the books is listed below:
- People of the Monolith: an hour or two (it’s a slim book of poems)
- Life as a God: a couple of days
- The Pnakotic Manuscripts: a week
That’s the time for one read-through, which will give a cursory understanding of the books. To fully comprehend and study the books will require much longer. Erica is perfectly willing to allow all of you access to the books, but she will not let them leave her property.
Also note that I will not deduct sanity loss for the books until you’ve encountered something to confirm their accuracy.]
“Please do, Mr. Gravener,” Erica says. “And if, in turn, there is something I might be able to do that would help your investigation, let me know.”
Erica stays on hand to let you peruse the books, but if you require time to study them alone, she will leave – though Joe Corey will linger in the room, just as a precaution. Though she works with you, she is apparently not ready to let her entire guard down. She will allow all of you a few hours to look through the books, but after that the hour of her party draws closer, and she must urge you all to leave for the night. “You may come back tomorrow if you think studying the books more will help. I will make sure my staff are expecting you.”
[You can spend more time reading, ask more questions, and leave when ready to do so.]

"Hmm. We're very appreciative of your help, you can be sure. If our investigation seems a little unorthodox, well, perhaps that will uncover some new answers. If we learn anything more about Mr. Brady, your brother, or the other principals of the investigation, we'll be sure to tell you."
