The truck bounces and bumbles down the road, once smooth dirt plowed into random piles by mortar shells and explosions of war. The dim lights of the vehicle faintly illuminate the odd remnant of war; a burned out husk of an American tank, chaotic scribblings of barbed wire strung between barricades...each a cold reminder that you are only heading deeper into hell, deeper into the den of the Reich.
It doesn't take long for you to gain your bearings, but given the conditions of the road the trip will seem to take much longer. You must drive slow, dodge road debris, and backtrack several times just to cover a few miles. By the time dawn breaks over the Eastern horizon, you can tell you are on the outskirts of a medium-sized town, somewhere in the Eastern Polish nation. A small group of German soldiers passes your direction, no more than ten men and two of them limping as if wounded; nothing to fret over. They don't even examine you closely once they note the gray uniforms and the markings on the truck.
You drive through a deserted and destroyed town by midday. One or two wall remain from each building and even those look ready to collapse. A bit of stained blood here, the smattering holes from auto-matic gunfire drilled through brick. The center of town once was dominated by a fountain, but in its place stands a wrecked truck-transport that has been overturned and burned to a charcoal black. The remnants of the citizens are seen among the ruins of war as well; a badly burned doll, an open suitcase with its contents strung across the road. The horrors of war, silently testifying to the actrocities done.
You rumble past the town, your fuel getting to just below a half tank. Coming up over the next hill, you spot a potential roadblock...literally.
There is a makeshift barricade in the road, crafted from large iron X's, barbwire and rubble. It extends well over a hundred feet to either side of the road. The road drives through the center of this barricade and into the lands beyond...presumably which are German lands. At the mouth of the barricade are twenty to twenty five German soldiers and their equipment. A tower about fifteen feet high has been built out of stone and wood on the North side of the road, just past the barricade. Beyond the barricade and to the South, another group of German soldiers mills about some heavy weaponry, tanks and mobile guns to name a few.
You can either try and drive around this mess at night, or drive through it and hope you can convince the Germans you are on their side. Of course...you are running out of gas too...
{On a DM note, I will be out of town until Tuesday after Memorial Day (US). I will see you all then and have a great weekend!}
