Gavigan’s eyebrows raise a little in surprise. “You wish to finish the Expedition’s intent?” He laughs lightly. “Well, I wish you luck, but as I said, Sir Aubrey discovered the Expedition’s goals to be a hoax. I was not even aware Mr. Elias knew so much about the Expedition’s aims. He certainly did not speak about an expedition of his own when we spoke. I thought he was an author.” Something about Gavigan’s tone changes during the preceding speech, something so subtle and slight that only Tommy makes note of it. He does seem genuinely surprised, but when he mentions the hoax and Mr. Elias again, there seems to be something... sour in his tone. Just for a moment, and then it’s gone.“I did not realize Mr. Elias knew Mr. al-Sayed so well, either...” Gavigan frowns deeply. “He’s passed? I’m very sorry to hear that. Mr. Elias seemed to be an intelligent and energetic man, even if he chose to specialize in a rather obscure field.” “You are correct, we have no interest in pursuing the Expedition’s purpose, giving the funds and time it has already cost us. If you are adamant about trying it yourself, feel free.” He shrugs helplessly. “But I assure you, it is pointless. As I’ve said before, the Expedition’s records were lost with Sir Aubrey, so I’m afraid I cannot even give you a head start with your fool’s errand. But our library is indeed extensive, and you are welcome to peruse it as you like—just as I will show you the artifacts, whenever you are ready. With your archeological aims, I am sure you will appreciate them.” List of clues

Rebecca sits back and feels mostly content to let Grey and Tommy ask Gavigan their questions. Normally she would be more inclined towards being more outgoing, but she feels strangely out of her element here. "Everyone is being so tight-lipped with us," she thinks, slightly frustrated. "I almost feel like we have to be more pushy if we're ever going to find out more about Jackson's involvement with all this."
Briefly, while Gavigan is responding to some of their questions, she muses inwardly that maybe she's been too worried about "the law" and not enough about discovering the truth. But she tries to put these thoughts aside so she can gather as much information as she can about this man, and perks up a bit at the mention of the extensive library.

[Thanks for taking control of Grey for me.]
Grey, finding Gavigan to be forthright and friendly to them, and his offer concerning Aubrey's letters reasonable, nodded. He understood that personal letters could not be given to them at the moment, but still there were some issues on his mind, as he was rather dissapointed to hear of the deception that had led to the expedition and the Foundation's current disinterest in looking into it further. But he understood it too, for as long as they would not be forthcoming themselves with their own new evidence, why would Gavigan be any more willing to go into the matter that has been such a tragedy until now? In short, he was waiting, and hoping, for mr. Cannon to show at least some of their information. As such, he gave him a telling glance, but nothing with too much pressure, hoping that Tommy would get the message and consider it, despite how protective he wisely was regarding his investigation material.
Then there was the matter of the current digging in Dahshur, of which he had heard rumors in the Geographical Society already. "Mr. Gavigan, I did hear about the current operations in Dahshur taking place, and would be very interested in any further details concerning it that you may be able to provide me. Who are the expedition leaders, and is there a way for us to contact them? Indeed, I am very interested to see what their results are, up to this moment."

Tommy's keen ears and watchful eyes pick up something in Mr. Edward Gavigan's demeanor that he can't place. Whatever it is he doesn't like it; it's like that Tewfik fellow...something is off about him and the Egyptian. Not wanting to show all his cards, but willing to prod just a little further Tommy continues: "I'm sorry to be a bother Mr. Gavigan, but you say that Mr. Penhew's notes, save his personal letters, were lost with him in Kenya and that the purpose of the expedition was a hoax. But you haven't clearly told us what the explicit goals of the expedition were, something we have been yearning to find out for a while. It's the first step in our own little expedition you see." He smiles a bit trying to make sure he doesn't sound accusatory. "Wouldn't it be great for us to complete the legendary Carlyle Expedition and delve even further to uncover more secrets of Egypt." He leans back in h is chair and laughs, as he says the words wistfully, as if it were a pipe dream.
"I know it is asking a bit much, but an expedition as grand as this one must have registered some of it's goals with the organization, right? Surely they didn't keep all hope and secrets with this thieving African woman? I ask only because, while most say it is a hoax, you know the natives they claim both ways, some say it is nothing but us white folks' attempt to steal their history, others say it is the real thing. This is why we want to look into it, this is what is making this so exciting!" He laughs again, as if it were a game hoping to appeal to the man's sense of adventure and quest for knowledge.
"As much as I'd love to look at the artifacts and the books both, I doubt that you allow people to borrow the books from your library, I'm dreadfully unaware of how things work here. So while I'd like to see exactly what Mr. Penhew dug up in Egypt, I feel we'd best optimize our time now?" He looks around to the group and settles on the young lady, "Ms. Devereux would you accompany me to the library, you are much better at these things than I. I bet this library will have a better selection than the one at Harvard." He puts an emphasis on the last part, hoping that she will understand his meaning.
Unless his questions would beget more questions, Tommy is satisfied with the interview. He pays very close attention to how the man reacts to the idea that it might not be a hoax, not only to what he says, but specifically how he says it.

Feeling slightly startled that Tommy has singled her out in the middle of his conversation with Gavigan, Rebecca momentarily takes a second to compose herself. She definitely got Tommy's hint. "Of course," she says, smiling with all the charm she can muster at Gavigan and Tommy. "I'll lend any assistance I can." She isn't quite sure if Tommy was expecting her to say anything else, so she looks at him, still smiling.

[Provided everything is cleared up and when everyone is settled with questions.]
"Great, thanks Rebecca," he smiles. Tommy makes sure to keep his confidence at all times, even when he's not even fifty percent sure of what he is doing. "Whenever you are ready, show us the way Mr. Gavigan."
When they eventually do leave, Tommy will fall behind to catch the ear of one of the other men, "Listen, I want you to make a note of every artifact that Penhew brought back, and keep your eyes peeled extra wide in there for anything out of the ordinary. Who knows what these artifacts can tell us, if a picture is worth a thousand words and these books are giving us strange leads....well you know, just keep an eye on them." After a moment of hesitation he adds quietly, "And watch Mr. Gavigan, I don't like the way he's acting...." Even if they didn't understand what Tommy meant, the knew he had strange even paranoid hunches about people, certainly it would be something to watch out for.
