What is a "hair shirt"? I think it's americanish for a form of clothing?
Does it mean "jumper" - i.e. a large baggy, often woolen, sweater.? Is that a hair shirt in america?

Wikipedia tells me that it's related to a 'Cilice', which is apparently a version of self-flagellation (well... corporal mortification). Apparently worn to inflict discomfort on oneself, typically in a Roman Catholic Church kind of way. ...Bizarre. Here's the article if you want to read for yourself.

oh! thanks for that. I always though it was an Americanism for "wooly jumper" because of a Barenaked Ladies song, "What a Good Boy".

I'm pretty sure that the barenaked Ladies are from Canada, so that's probably the issue right there. Getting their stuff confused with our stuff.

And here Shakes deftly illustrates a true Americanism: Blame Canada.
