Appearence: Douglas is a distinguished-looking middle-aged man in practical but nonetheless fine clothing.
Personality: Clever, amoral, aristocratic, loyal, polite, deceptive, competent, well-read, and deadly, Douglas is a complex man.
Background: Douglas has a reputation among the more upper-class districts of Phoenix Homage as a gentleman adventurer, cemented by several ghostwritten and highly fictionalized 'autobiographical' adventure novels. The reality is somewhat more sordid; faced with gambling debts that had devoured his entire estate, Douglas was forced to desperate measures in order to pay the loan sharks beginning to circle. Covering his face with a theatrical mask, he went to Witherwood Square, one of the slumx of Pheonix Homage, to gain the money by criminal means. His first mugging was interrupted by a city guard almost immediately; grasping at straws, Douglas stumbled upon a moment that was to change his life.
"'Ello, 'ello! What's all this, then?"
"Er. I've...decided to clean up the streets! We've tolerated the weaknesses and criminal tendencies of the underclasses for too long! This man is a mugger!"
"What!? Here, you tried to-"
Douglas cut him off by pressing the blade of his cane-sword to the man's throat.
"Don't insult us with your feeble excuses, you degenerate."
A slow smile spread across the guard's face.
"Well, it's about time somebody got to it! I'll just leave you to it, then."
Disbelief and anger warred on the 'mugger's' face as the guard strolled off with a smile. Pain joined those expressions for a time, then gave way to the blankness of death. As Douglas cleaned his blade, he thought of the future- and laughed.
After that, Douglas made a career of cleaning up the more crime-ridden sections of Pheonix Homage in a viciously violent manner, supporting himself with the ill-gotten gains he seized in the process. He'd just finished killing the members of a street gang to the last man when he discovered the 'Investigators Wanted' notice in his coat pocket, and after a brief change of clothes, he went directly to Triangle Park.
