I am unable to step up as a player, though I'm interested in seeing where this goes. It's a very challenging story from the looks of it--I wish you luck, and I will certainly be reading if this gets underway.
As for a game system, though, I would recommend True20. It's an extremely flexible system, and can easily be tailored to using very mundane characters, and incorporating elements of the Sanity system CofC is well known for (without the need that this be Lovecraftian horror). You don't even have to use 'classes', and can make everyone 'Ordinaries'. It will indeed be bloody and bitter for them, though.

The basal idea is very depressing, you summarized it very well.
There being no Act II is chilly, the thing that makes post-apocalyptic stories popular is a world that is flourishing anew. Your story different, hope not included.
If you dont get enough players, I may join.
(Welcome to the boards, by the way=)

Thanks for the True20 tip, TheUdjat. I'll check it out, though being an unemployed student, the chances of me buying a new game book are pretty slim.
Thanks for the input, menatkhufu. It is very depressing, but that's its charm. I wouldn't want to run it as anything other than a short game. My endurance for depressing is high but not without limits.

I like it, if there is anything I can do to help you out, I'd be more than willing to. If you wanted to homebrew the rules that would be fine too, a number of board members do that with pretty spectacular results.

Thanks for the input, guys. That helps my thinking a lot. I think, however, with one "yes," one "no," and one "if no one else wants to . . . maybe" its just not going to happen here. I am going to run it though, so I'll keep you posted on how things are progressing. I would like to run or play in a game here. It looks like there are enough people here interested in playing in an active game (two or three rounds of posting a week) to get something together. I'll noodle on it some more.
