Aside from the normal stuff in the PHB (yada yada), is this skill used to identify magic items? Say I find a ring, and after I cast Detect Magic on it, noting a magical aura around it, what skill would I have to use to identify what this ring does?
Thanks

If I recall correctly, yes, Spellcraft is the skill in question. But I think the DC is pretty high for identifying items to a terribly useful degree. But then, I don't get many chances to test all that out, so I'm hardly the expert on the subject.

Spellcraft also helps you in countering spells and identifying whats being cast at you

You're talking about an epic use of appraise. It's very hard to identify a magic item with skills...something that I don't really agree with, but whatever. Maybe I'll change it in Kenelton's.

There is a first level spell Identify that give the most prominent magical ability(s) of an item. Beyond that there is a spell that give the complete identity of an item, but I’m not sure what that one is called it’s 5th level I think. Problem is ID takes 8 hours to perform so nothing a wiz/sor can do on the spot.

Analyze Dweomer. And it only takes 1 round to cast.

And then there's the way we play in my campaign, where I tell the players after about 5 minutes what any given item does, reagardless of what they do, because I'm lazy and can't remember the item myself for more than that length of time...
I like that rule.
