I agree, though I do think power-mad wizards as genocidal avatars is a cool take- and an interesting way of eliminating certain reaces for the setting. Well, yeah, it's kind of interesting, albeit ultimately unnecessary. Is there really a reason they needed to explain the elimination of certain races? There's no real reason they had to exist at all. Take Dragonlance, where there are no orcs at all. They weren't killed off, they just never existed, so no explanation was needed. Original Dark Sun seemed suitably similar--or else they could've just died off from an inability to evolve. It didn't have to be all 'Okay, such-and-such went and killed them all off over the course of a thousand years.' Blech. Just seemed completely unnecessary. Although one cool take on an alternate Dark Sun is to have it be Dragonlance in the 6th age, hehe. That makes for a lot of different angles with the setting, and in some ways is really damned interesting. But probably not something to do for now. I'm excited about the new game. Time to get thinking on what my character will be... At least in a loose way, until guidelines are put up.
