...I tried to run a Dark Sun game. Unfortunately, just before starting it the job I had sent me hurtling across the country for weeks at a time, often to places with no internet access, bringing me home for a weekend before flying me off again. Needless to say, the campaign never even got past the introductions.
But times have changed. My current job doesn't send me anywhere, won't BE sending me anywhere, and I'm finding myself with lots and lots of free time to devote here, which is one of the few sites I can actually visit. And, perhaps because of some kind of creativity bug going around (look at all the new games!), I'm inspired to run something. Lots of talk about old games drew me to glance over that old Dark Sun game, and I realized a lot of potential coolness was lost when I didn't get that game going.
So I'd like to try again.
I realize that the boards are busier than ever these days, and that most people don't have limitless time to spend on here. I would not be at all surprised if nobody has the time for another game. But I figured I'd ask. If at least 4 people want to kick in the time to play, I'd be glad to run it.
Any of you guys from the first time around (Vemu and KMan, off the top of my head) are welcome to join again. No matter how many people speak up, previous players are guaranteed a spot, if you want it. But since a lot of those old players are gone (Wizard, Kauyon, others), there's plenty of room.
So, anyone up for some gritty, savage desert adventures?

You're right, there's a lot of activity going on making people busy, and I am pretty much one of them, but of course I would never be able to say no to Dark Sun. What was he called again? Furni? Yeah, we were summoned to the queen and I was sitting beside that leprous dwarf-'thing' that Kman had spawned from the dark corners of his twisted mind. What a great game that was...

Well...I would El-Oh-Vee-Ee to play this Dark Sun, but I've got a boatload on my plate now. If you could postpone just a wee-bit (until at least the BOYD battle royale ends with Malanuus victorious) that would be cool. Of course, I don't want to hold anything up so feel free to start up whenever, I can easily dig the game out of archives whenever.

If you want to use the same character, that makes it even easier, since I could spend some time getting any newbies to the world prepared. Dark Sun is, after all, complex and alien. Besides, it won't take too long for Caelith to utterly destroy that minotaur. Rojito - all the 3.5 Dark Sun information is available at athas.org, for free last I checked. Since I appear to have 4 players already, I'll just add that I'm willing to accept more, if people are interested.

One thing that's come out since you last tried to run DS is Sandstorm, which should be tremendously helpful for that kind of campaign. Do you have it? I can PM you some of the more useful rules if not.

I have nothing from Sandstorm, though I would appreciate any info (and will check out KMan's link post-haste).
My biggest trouble with Dark Sun has always been 1. The City-States, and 2. Monsters. It's so hard to find maps for Dark Sun, because very few official ones were ever made. But I LIKE having a map, dammit. Monsters, on the other hand, are just so damn bizarre. Thank god they made some bestiaries.
I'm half-tempted to just take Ansalon (Dragonlance) and use it as a prototype for the 'Green Age' Athas.

For you Kman, the battle will end very quickly, so don't worry. Romar will die soon too, with Krysta and Adelia coming after him, but not before you leave the battlefield. All you got are lots of HP, but that will only last you so long with your mental attributes the size of a peanut. Of course, I also tend to have a bigger mouth than I should have. BTW, wasn't it your initial intention to resume the old campaign where we left? If not so, I may even be interested in making a new character. I liked Furni, but I also like making new characters.

That post of K Man's includes a lot of the useful stuff, except for the monsters and feats.

I'm undecided, actually. I don't remember exactly what I was planning to do last time, but it seems intriguing. It'd be pretty easy to do whatever I want with everyone there. On the other hand, I had some other ideas, too. I'll have to think about it. But either way, new characters are welcome, so if you'd like to change, that'd be fine. It might actually help you out, as I plan to try something a little different with character-creation this time around... So you'll probably have to adjust characters a bit, anyhow.

Good stuff! Some things will have to be 'adjusted' for Dark Sun's unique environment ('sunglasses' are unnecessary, as the Athasian sun is actually quite dim... just very big, and very hot), but many things, particularly the heat rules, are quite nice. I'll probably take out the hydro suit, though, and maybe the keepcool salve. Too easy. Or access will just be extremely limited.
