Props to everyone thats come up with background stories for your characters. Many of them are very creative.
It seems that portion of character creation is the hardest to get "my" players to do. In my Table top games it always get skipped by the majority of the players or they come up with thinly pasted togather story if called on it.
To Kman's credit he does exploit any bit of background anyone will give him and turns it into a great game.
How about your tabletop games? Do people take the time to come up with good back stories?

Heck no. I put a LOT more work into online character histories, because I play those characters everyday. I don't know if my group will meet more than 2 times ever again, b/c we're all leaving for college next year, and many of us are vacationing somewhere this summer. So you ain't alone. I'm sure thrawn86 would be happier if I put as much effort into my tabletop characters as I do into online characters. Heck, even my Core Arena character on the WotC forums has more background than any tabletop D&D character I've ever played. Back when we played SWRPG (yeah 2nd edition! Go West End! I had an invincible (I do mean INVINCIBLE) bounty character with a pretty good background.

We never get together to play because Wizard is always off giving his sibling rides, or coaching, or in Tahoe. We played last week, just without him. And we're starting a Vampire game next weekend, also sans Wizard. So there. Oh yeah, nobody puts any background into anything over here.

I have similar experience. Although, admittedly, one of my groups is much better at background than the other.
Friday's very good at backgrounds. When they put forth the effort to do it. Granted, I've found that in D&D my Friday group tends to be a bit more clueless than in Cthulhu, but I think this is a result of their not knowing as much about D&D. But there's a player or two that always have trouble with 'getting into' the story...
Saturday... *sigh* Some make an effort, but most do not. Others, and this might even be more annoying, build the background from the character, and not the character from the background. If you know what I mean. I like the two to correspond and make sense, but it's silly when the background is just being used to justify the stats/stuff they want. I think I encounter this most often with White Wolf games, though.
