Background
Elric was once a first rank commoner in a nearby lord's fief, a nobody doing nothing anyone would ever remember. Doing what needed to be done, mostly hunting and trapping for food, but he was not above a petty theft during the winter months. While the lord had most of his army off in some foreign territory, an all out land grab amongst local lords, one of the less than reputable lords decided to make a play for the Clan Zahringen's, Elric's lord's, land. With his army distracted elsewhere, the Zahringen raised mixed army of peasant militiamen and the remaining professionals to defend his territory. Elric joined for an easy three hot meals and was surprised to find out how adept he was at combat. Not only was he strong and fast, but he took to the chaos of combat with ease. After a number of skirmishes, several of Elric's comrades in arms began to gravitate towards him during battle as they began to notice that men who fought along side him and listened to his short term plans tended to live through the otherwise brutal battles. It earned him more than one wet blade during battle, accolades from his comrades and a number of vicious scars from his enemies.
It also caught the eye of some of the professional soldiers who, not missing a chance to pawn off some of their duty, assigned Elric a small contingent of men to command during their battles. No more than twenty men, and never professionals, but Elric always made due and the men were pleased to be a part of the unit with the lowest casualty rate.
The territorial dispute was ended quickly when the Zahringen reinforcement armies finally arrived and turned back the invaders, but that wasn't quite the end of Elric's military story. After a parade honoring the soldiers and to a lesser extent the militia volunteers, Elric drunkenly found his way to a noble's victory party. Losing sight of himself and his place in society, he seduced a noble's daughter who was easily enamored by the trivialities of a commoner's life and a warrior's path. Unfortunately word broke out and Elric had a warrant put out for his arrest an execution on grounds of rape and theft. The way he saw it was as though he saved them money on a dowry.
During his stint in the military he heard of a place where Magi collected in the mountains and had set up a sort of commune for all manner of misfits. Seeing this as his best hope to escape his rightfully earned punishment, Elric headed for the hills quite literally.
Upon his arrival at the Kaiserstuhl Covenant he was accepted into it on the grounds that he provided some sort of service for the betterment of the community. With no real marketable skills he offered to join their Guard. Throughout his years living and working there he has excelled in his duties, soon he became a drillmaster for the new initiates in the guard and any others who wished to be able to defend themselves better. As it was a place of study and with a lasting peace cause by fear of the Magi, Elric turned to somewhat scholarly pursuits himself. While they refused to teach him to read and write himself, he did get to read books on small unit tactics and warfare vicariously through one helpful, yet lazy young apprentice in exchange for a little money and an open invitation to teach him to fight should he ever felt the desire.
Promoted from Drillmaster to Captain brought a tear to Elric's eye as it was one of the first times he was ever publicly recognized for excelling, causing a swelling of pride in his heart. It put him second in command to the Guard's Marshal, he suspected it had to do with his ability to manage the wide variety of soldiers from more colorful backgrounds. Elric had lived in the Covenant for years and yet never met a full fledged Magus, almost all of his orders came through letters delivered and read to him by Apprentices.
Today his orders came through the word of the Apprentice who had taken the time to read books to him. Today he was needed to help deliver another letter and conduct a trading mission.
