Hi. I'm new to D&D and don't know how to play it. People in my neighborhood and at my school don't play D&D and I read about it and think its worth a shot. I do play some warhammer 40k but I'm sure this is nothing like it. I was wondering if there was anyone who could walk me through a play-by-post game. Thanks in advanced.

Best way to learn would be to find a game and jump in - the DM will be able to give you a few pointers on putting a character together.
Take a peek at TheUdjat's post in the 'how to get started' section - he's not kidding about the time scale of play by post games.
If you take a look at the currently active games you'll see a link to contact the game's moderator (DM) - send a few PMs around.
