Hello folks!
First off, it’s nice to see everyone again. No really, it is. I’ve lurked every now and again over the years and even tried to break back into the boards a few times, but to no effect. Every time I peeked in I found a steadily collapsing empire. And it wasn’t the games or lack thereof that made it that way. It was the departure of colleagues, friends, and brothers-in-arms. As a small community, each one of us formed a pillar, and as we left, the building began to crumble. To see giants and childhood heroes such as Vemu, Udjat, Wizard, TTC, Wicksy, Spiral, Kman, Lin, ‘Shakes, and a dozen others stepping foot onto the stage, or peeking out from behind the curtain, sets something right with me.
I started here as a sophomore high school, and stand here today as a working professional with a college degree. The difference, chronologically speaking, is but a blip on the timeline of human events, yet it spans the entirety of my adult life. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be the same person without the experiences I had here as a teenager. Needlessly mushy? Undoubtedly, but it is irrevocably true.
The last time I was (really) on “the boards” was right before a major shift in my life. In the wake of that personal calamity, I found that the way that I had structured my life was profoundly and irreversibly different. I almost dropped out of college, but readjusted and set off in search of something... more. The search has brought me full circle, and I’ve found something I hadn’t expected. You. You all. Thanks for the return, whatever happens. It means a great deal to a weary traveler, even if it is so sodding melodramatic.
With that in mind, I’m challenging myself to joining, or maybe even starting, a game here to explore that feeling again. I think that it will be cathartic, in a way that is both deeply meaningful and entertaining. I’ve cleared some time, and I know that I can commit to it. The only problem becomes the game itself.
I’d like to try something fresh. Not necessarily a new system, but certainly a different setting than the usual high fantasy. I’m tired of the old tropes of elves and dwarves, of vampires, of werewolves, or even of magic. Something steampunk, ancient, or science fiction would fit the bill. I have fond memories of Renascimento and the Red Shift short. Another game in that vein would be interesting, different, and, most importantly, fun to play. Perhaps I am being too picky or particular, and I would accept that criticism gladly. Either way, I thought it best to appeal to the community first.
What do you all think?
