Sizable portions of the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide were just released for free under an open gaming license. Not all of the content is there, but a pretty big chunk of it is. If you were using the basic rules before, this should represent a substantial upgrade. You can download it as a PDF here.
