Moving along the north bank, far enough away from the river to not be easily visible to those on the other side, Ka'lion starts towards the cave while his owls watch the movements of the approaching riders.
As they get close he turns more northwards, taking him fully out of sight of the far bank and perhaps confusing them as to his destination. The owls tell him that they have stopped at the bank and dismounted, but after a short pause they remount and continue west towards the mill - whether to cross at the bridge or to follow the others he does not know but turning eastwards once again Ka'lion is now confident of reaching the cave before they can run him down.

Ka'lion keeps going to the cave and turn off his hat. So he no longer looks like the man that was on the other side of the river. He was impulsive he knows - but we'd have no time to set up an ambush at the old mill and if the rest of the parties followed and he dissent then the party will soon know it's something the rest of the party is carrying that is the problem and the plain was to meet again at the bridge the following day.

Reaching the cave Ka'lion finds nothing new disturbed, either those following ignored it or did not know of it. Either way the magic of the hidden room should shield him from divination.

It's time to look over the magic book so at dusk Ka'lion meditates on knew spells taking a detect poison and casting it on the book outside off the cave. He'll get some sleep until then. Note: Ka'lion bought into the main room his horse.

Ka'lion finds that the horse is not keen on moving too deeply into the cave, likely an aspect of the protective spells cast upon it.

Is the wolf still in the outer chamber of the cave?

The horse will willingly enter the cave, it is simply very uncomfortable spending any time in the room at the back. The cave is deep enough that it can be hidden from view without being too far in. Is the wolf still in the outer chamber of the cave? (no - but Vadania is currently in the other thread, heading in the other direction )

Ka'lion takes his horse to the first room and gets some sleep after unloading his gear and putting it in the back room. Then Kalion checks with his owls to learn where the rest of the party has gone - sending a tiny message to be delivered to Vadania that just says caves secure - see you back at the bridge in the morning. I may of gone the wrong direction from the place your headed we know nothing about. Remember the tower. Stay alert.

The owl returns with the message still tied to its leg - it would seem that Vadania and her party had made good time, reaching the old mill and underground passage before the owl could reach them.
(subject to change if the party takes different actions)

Ka'lion removes the bob wired and opens the inside the cave to read. What does he learn?

It appears to contain (rather grisly) instructions on how to craft a golem from flesh and bone, though the book contains a great deal of other commentary, symbolism, chants, and arcade script that make little sense to Ka'lion.

A manual to make flesh golem. Well his family might buy it. But he doesn't know anyone else that would - he put's it away and checks with his owls to learn if the riders are following him or the rest of the party and if they are moving at night?

TBD - as Ka'lion has rested until dusk while the other party has only moved an hour west.

It's hard for me to know when dusk is in the other group - they don't even know because they are underground.
In any case Ka'lions owls are sent to to stock the ridders movements. Ka'lion wants to know where they are.

The riders followed the others upstream to the old mill - however the party haven't decided to fight or to run at this point so I can't pre-empt their action. Nor is Ka'lion strong enough alone to fight a random encounter such as the wandering ogre mage.
He may want to read some of the other paperwork from here though.

He has time and likes to read so he'll read as much as he can.
And I agree with you that the ogre mage should of been a reason used to get Ka'lion to stay with the party but no one said anything about it. Ka'lion just didn't like being hunted and instinctively headed to a place that detect magic type magic wouldn't work - the riders problem he feel's is Vedanta's problem - she killed the two scouts just because they where evil and Ka'lion said at the time evil dissent mean guilty. But those 2 riders are dead because Vedanta over reacted. The fact that the entire party are still injured and should be out of spells at this time means the rest of the party has few spells left. Why did Ka'lion head to the cave and not to the mill with the others? He was still hurt and the entire party was out of healing spells and all of them where still badly injured. Going to a place the party had never been struck him as stupid. The cave was nearby and likely to be safer with an invisible ogre mage around as well. You never said anything about how much room was the height of the cave - but a known safe place that had been undisturbed for years is defiantly safer then the unknown. Those are Ka'lion's arguments but we where in a rush and the party following a unknown girl into danger stuck him as typical of Vadanina and there fact that Think wouldn't make up her mind just bugged him. As I've said many times low wisdom and charisma can be a problem..

Looking around the cave and the secret room Ka'lion finds the papers and books to be somewhat unusual - stories, legends, songs, and tales. Nothing especially recent but thumbing through the books he finds pages where entries have been marked. Some are stories of mysterious patrons, others are of individuals with curious powers or quirks. Against the quirks in particular he sometimes notes that a few letters have been scribed, perhaps a code or reference.
-Is there any particular historical or magical event/ability that Ka'lion would want to look for to read in more depth? - based on what he has encountered of learnt of the Steadlands and surrounding area? These are stories and songs, not tomes of secrets and truenames, but are quite comprehensive.
