Backstory:
Background: Criminal
Mantis is a custom prototype mechanic droid manufactured on the world of Charros IV by Haor Chall Engineering. Hoar Chall was much better known for their manufacture of vulture droids and droid gunships and transports. While the HC-MTS prototype was quite a well designed and adaptable model, Haor Chall never found a buyer, as the Trade Federation, and CIS preferred more military focused designs.
HC-MTS was not scrapped however, he was instead put to work in the cathedral-factories on Charros IV, building vulture droids. It was in this role that he was first sold. He was included in a batch of vulture droids that were delivered to Malastare to provide security for the Vinta Harvest Classic pod race.During the event, the master to whom Mantis was assigned as part of that delivery lost a bet he had placed on the race. Of course he did not have the funds to pay his debts, so he forged the ownership documents aon Mantis, and forfeited ownership of Mantis to his creditor.
This is the beginning of where Mantis ownership started to get blurry. Legally he was still owned directly by Haor Chall Engineering, but now he had been traded to another master. And kept in line via restraining bolt. Several years passed, and he was traded several more times, often being lost in gambling on podraces.
He eventually found himself in the pit crew of one such podracer pilot, Avar Chekka, a member of the tiny Aleen species. His owner was not above cheating, and often tasked Mantis with sabotaging competitors. It was the night before the Boonta Eve Classic in Mos Espa and Mantis was on one such foray when his fate changed. He was returning from slicing and reprogramming several of his targets pit droids, when he interrupted an assassin attempting to make his escape from Avar Chekka's rented garage.
His master's orders to defend the podracer, as well as his owner overrode his programming and behavioural inhibitor to not harm sentient beings, as such inaction would allow harm to his master.
Mantis was able to overpower the assassin through surprise, and sheer luck. He was too late to save the life of his master, and it was at that point that his heuristic processor got stuck in a dilemma. He no longer had a master, his former owner had never established who he should seek out in such a case. there was no next of kin or creditors that would take possession. But he also knew that without an owner, the jawas would soon take possession of everything and dismantle him. Inaction would led to his own harm, which also went against his behavioural inhibitors.
Logically with the assassin dead, no one knew that Avar Chekka was also dead. Mantis realized that if no one knew Avar was dead, then no one would know that Mantis had no master. Leaving the dead body of the assassin on the shop floor, Mantis picked up the aleena's body, tucked it into a toolbox and took it to a trash shredder. along with a bunch of other scrap. Fed into the scrap shredder the tiny aleena's body will never be found (note droids do not have emotional attachments to proper treatments of bodies.. to him his former master was just dead biological material.
For several years now Mantis has been operating as a 'fixer for hire' under the guise of still working for his master Avar Chekka. Most people assume that Avar is in hiding from whomever had hired the assassin, choosing to no longer expose himself in public. In the larger city of Mos Eisley it would be easy for a creature the size of an Aleena (0.75 meters tall) to remain well hidden. 'Avar chekka' will only interact with clients via sending his droid (Mantis), or by meeting via holo-projected transmision. (A fals ruse used by Mantis using sliced footage of holorecordings of his deceased former master.
Recently things have gone against Mantis howver. The twi'lek owner of the Dancing Sarlacc seems to have caught onto his ploy, and has been asking him to perform tasks for her. In order to safely complete these tasks, he has had to acquire a blaster, as well as upgrade by adding a grapple gun. That cost credits, which she loaned him, placing him further into her debt.
