I'm not sure if anyone cares, and this may be fairly obsolete and primitive given that I am only working with the PHB, but I find the class system in D&D 4th to be too restrictive, so I worked out rules for a generic martial character class. I had originally tried to include all the base classes, but wizard and Paladin were just to hard to shoe-horn in, and Warlock is too self contained.
If they have released other martial character types, or a system of doing this on their own, I'd love to know about it.

Generic Warrior:
Start with 12 Hp, 6 surges, and 5 Hp per level
Add +2 to any one of Fort, Will, or Reflex defense, or add +1 to any two of them.
Choose one of:
Combat Challenge (as Fighter), add 3 start Hp, 3 surges, and 1 Hp per level
Hunter's Quarry (as Ranger)
Sneak Attack and First Strike (as Rogue)
Inspiring Word (as Warlord), add 1 surge
Choose one of:
One handed weapon talent (as Fighter)
Two handed weapon talent (as Fighter)
Prime Shot (as Ranger)
Rogue Weapon Talent (as Rogue)
Combat Leader (as Warlord)
