The swarm immediately moves to follow, forcing the group to raise their pace to stay ahead of it. Gradually the noise and the flicker of light against their wings fades into the darkness as you continue to run. Stopping for a moment to catch your breath Vadania peers into the sky, seeking to determine time and direction, but the clouds conceal the stars and the sky. The burning branch is also close to extinguished.
It's hard to say how far ahead of the swarm you have run, or if it still pursues you. The run has left the group tired but not exhausted ... yet. Do you continue or make camp here?

"Well, that wasn't expected. Staying out here might only invite more trouble. Heading back to town might be best. We can better prepare to deal with any more swarms, and we should probably warn the town. I'm sure they would like to know of the swarm."

Glancing around you realise that you arn't entirely sure which direction the town lies in, without the light of the moon or sun to guide you. Your flight from the swarm has taken you from the road though Vadania is confident that she could follow the group's muddy tracks back even in this light.
The clearing you find yourselves standing in is also curious, the ground underfoot unexpectedly hard. Poking at it with the toe of your boot indicates that there was once some kind of stone construction here though you know of no settlements so old within the fell.

Cold, wet, and tired Salyyn says, "Nicely done wildling! Great idea, sleeping under a nest, perfect. Nah!"

Is it still raining?
"Hmmm... Getting back may be more difficult than I had anticipated... and this place is curious..."
If it is still raining, Rolan will look for some cover from the rain, if not, he is going to look around for some clues as to where they are and what this place once was.

YesRolan ducks under a tree, finding what shelter he can. Kicking the mud at his feet he dislodges a few more pieces of rock and stone - as if a wall or structure had once stood here long ago. Nearby Vadania tends to the many tiny bite marks on Ylva's hide, as is relieved to find no indication of infection or poison. For a moment she stops, a faint noise out of place, but then it is gone amidst the roar of the storm.

Sorry I've been absent. Stopped getting notice of new posts and just now thought to check.(game will be updated every few days at minimum come hell or high water - though there is a limit to what I can add while the characters idle and chat)
The area seems safe enough. Vadania finds what may have once been a well, though it has long since collapsed in. Whatever was once here was abandoned many centuries ago.

Salyyn sends Vadania a glare for her comment but decides against replying. looking around he will try to examine the new location for anything out of the ordinary.

A cursory glance around the area finds little else of note - no swarms of voracious insects at least. The structure does not appear to have been of elven origin but beyond that there is little Salyyn can ascertain about it.
With no sign of pursuit from the insects the group settles down once more for an uncomfortable night, perhaps wishing that they had paused to buy some form of shelter or at least a thick blanket before leaving town. The rain does abate a little during the night, though never entirely ceasing, and at length the first light of the sun can be seen through the distant clouds.
Vadania has a sense of the direction you might travel to rejoin the road, or else you could backtrack. At least with the rain and the mud it should be easy to spot if the caravan had passed you by in the night.

Rolan did buy an extra blanket actually.
"This area does intrigue me a bit... but unfortunately, we have no time right now to investigate. We still need to find the caravan. So, shall we search for them now? Or head back first to town? The guard would probably like to know about the swarm, and we can better prepare."

Vadania responded. "I think we should search for them now, that's what we promised to do. We can report on the swarm when we report on what became of the caravan."

The decision is made to continue, as voracious as the swarm was surely one large enough to threaten clearwater would not have snuck up upon the group so quietly.
With the light of the sun as a guide Vadania soon finds the path once more and, seeing no indication that a caravan has passed, the party continues into the fell.
Hours pass, and now that the rain has stopped - at least for a while - the lack of bird song is evident. The group's own footsteps seem uncharacteristically loud along the muddy track and the muted sunlight casts long shadows into the forest around you.
Of the caravan there is no sign, but as the sun begins to set once more the party crests a low ridge and are greeted by the sound of faint cries, human you think, from the shallow valley below.

How far away do the human cries sound? Close by, an hour away? Further?
Vadania forgets about making camp. In this hostile land, helping others in trouble is far more important. She tries to determine where the cries are coming from.

How far away do the human cries sound? Close by, an hour away? Further? Less that 100 yards away - a human voice will only travel so far in forest

Vadania and her wolf will head towards the cries. Although moving rapidly, all senses are on full alert looking for an ambush or any other signs of trouble.
Vadania has been a bit paranoid about ambushes since her parents were killed in an ambush. That's why her Spot and Listen are so high...

A half dozen men stagger into view along the path, all human. They are all armed and appear exhausted, and some are visibly injured. Four of the men are dressed in travelling garb while the others seem to be mercenaries.
Upon sighting you they stop and raise their weapons but appear unsure of their next action, looking around as if fearful of pursuit or ambush. One of the men shouts in a hoarse voice "who goes there?"

"Vadania," she called back, knowing it would mean nothing to them. Since they didn't seem in immediate danger, she stopped her approach. "Are you from the caravan?"

One of the armoured men begins to speak, "what business is..." before he is cut off by another "yes, yes! Are you from clearwater? Are there more of you?". The man gestures wildly towards the valley behind him "there is some thing from the fell, it's behind us, it's always behind us!"
