Salyyn casts Mage armor on Kenny. As he does so, Kenny moves opposite Rolan and attempts to attack the creature.

Kenny's attack seems effective ... you think. The creature seems more annoyed than injured as the skeleton's blows pass through it's semi-solid form.

Since I am now flanking the creature, wouldn't my attack go off?
[dice=20] + 2 (flanking) = 8
[dice=06] [dice=06] (Sneak attack) Total 9 damage. [rand=24918061989228568943811993287372882223867127859948581489611678136]

Rolan slips quietly behind the creature, looking for an opportunity to strike, but the shifting shadows and erratic light leave him flailing at thin air.
Nearby Vadania looks for a clear shot into the melee as Ylva guards her.
(back around to vadina's action)

Realizing that she wasn't going to get a clear shot, Vadania switched to scimitar and shield and closed with the monster of shadow. With a silent signal Ylva circled around to flank the beast. Between the 4 of them they had the monster surrounded, perhaps that would keep it from disappearing on them.
Changing weapons and closing. the gaps to surround the thing with Vadania and Ylva flanking for each other. Can either make an attack this round or is the round spent just getting into position?

Can either make an attack this round or is the round spent just getting into position? [/color][/quote] You can charge. Ylva can't as she is moving to flank (and you have to charge in a straight line)

Vadania waits until Ylva gets into position, then charges. Hit:[dice=20]+2(flank)+2(charge)=16 Damage:[dice=6][rand=59368067653849726516780913807452221936169313266878772611669264734]

Striking the creature feels much like striking water, as Vadania's strike seems to make contact but then slips through with little effect.
It spares a momentary glare, a look of pure evil, flailing it's arms left and right but it's true intent seems focussed on the target before it.
Rolan and Vadania cannot help but note that Salyyn's odd hooded companion seems entirely unperturbed by the assault and the shadow creature hisses it's frustration.
As the group surround the creature a few of the merchant guards who had not fled far take heart at, holding their ground for now.
(Kenny takes 2 points of damage after DR)
Rolan, Kenny, and Salyyn up

Can i use Knowledge Arcana, or Religion to figure out what this guy/thing is?Salyyn sees Kenny get attacked, and while it doesn't seem to faze Kenny it does irratate Salyyn. Salyyn raises his hands and invokes another spell onto Kenny. "Size matters." Salyyn says, as Kenny grows to the size of a full grown ogre. Salyyn casts Enlarge on Kenny. Kenny then uses a Full attack on the figure, swiping at it with both oversized hands. Attack 1: +2 (not including flanking) [dice=20] = 16 Attack 2: +2 (not including flanking) [dice=20] = 15
Attack 1: +2 [dice=6] =5 Attack 2: +2 [dice=6] =5 [rand=66432644367174227520448151818198393420368494616256734851403024971]

Can i use Knowledge Arcana, or Religion to figure out what this guy/thing is? (roll it)The creature seems to lose a little definition, as if the shadows that make it's form are being pulled away. Still it shows no indication of anything but rage, indeed it's attention appears to be turning away from Kenny...[rand=2187963255295165541557296989814096773977645630608937609421860643505]

Rolan tries again to strike the shadow.
[dice=20] + 2(Flanking) = 18 For [dice=06] [dice=06] (Sneak Attack) Total 2 damage. (Yay.)[rand=8002430740803875052732160661795281775896635634668510496023055582]

(lol)While the creature shows no sign of actual harm the attacks of the group do seem to be hemming it in as it swipes ineffectually in all directions, seemingly unsure of which target to attack. Several of the guards cheer at this turn of fortune, though only one steps forward to aid you. (Around to Vadania)

The opponent might be new but the tactics were well practiced. First Vadania distracts the monster while Ylva goes for the leg: Attack:[dice=20]+3+2(flank)=16 Damage:[dice=6]+1=4 Trip (STR roll if hit):[dice=20]+1=20
Then Vadania goes high, swinging down with her Scimitar Attack:[dice=20]+2(flank)=13 +4(if it's now prone) = 17 Damage:[dice=6][rand=5395248008426279703606944065541694554648594930813787319720722735]

Waiting for her opportunity Ylva bites onto the leg of the creature as it turns away and drags sideways will all of her strength. Even as Vadania raises her sword she can see the creature fade, creating shadows where there should be none and then within scant moments gone from sight altogether.
The guard who had approached closer stuttered in disbelief, "did you ... is it ..." his final words are lost as a black cloud of shadow explodes from the ground before him, claws slicing for his throat. The man falls and the creature seems to collapse into his shadow and vanish once more.
Seconds drag by, everyone alert and expecting attack, silence and stillness. The fallen guard then pushes himself back along the ground, seeking to regain his feet - it seems the blow had missed. "...is it dead?"
The party stands alert but there is no more sign of the creature. Vadania takes the opportunity to end the spell of entanglement and free those who fled into it, but as the branches withdraw a single merchant can be seen unmoving within.
(end of combat, free to act)

Vadania goes to the unmoving merchant to see if he still lives and will try to stabilize him if possible. As she does so she asks her new friends, "Did any of you recognize that thing?"

The merchant stares lifelessly into the sky, though he bears no visible wounds. Vadania recalls that he had been one of those near the creature when it first struck.
The reactions of the guards indicate that this was indeed the creature that had chased them, and they were already collecting themselves to leave least it return.
One of the guards approaches the dead man and reaches down, for a moment is appears that he intends to take the body with them, but instead he pulls away a heavy looking sack tied across the man's back.

Vadania asks, "Just out of curiosity, is it always the person carrying that sack that dies?"Not having much experience with people, she hadn't learned how to be tactful.

Vadania asks, "Just out of curiosity, is it always the person carrying that sack that dies?" The guard looks quizzically at you, "you think it's after the armour?"You note that the guard is already carrying another makeshift sack, as do all of the others, and there is the faint sound of metal scraping against metal from within. One of the merchants approaches, "it couldn't be, what would a beast want with it? and why hasn't it tried to take it?"

The merchants seem unwilling to stand around and discuss the matter, still fearful that the creature may return, and leave their companion at the roadside.
It will take nearly two days to return to town given the slow pace of the exhausted merchants, and the decision must be made to either push on or to stop and rest - it may be safest to do such during the day but it would certainly delay your escape from the fell for another night.
