Back, ready to take over Aelos again. Just let me know when (I'll be checking tomorrow (Thursday) so I can take the turn. Sorry again, life likes to be busy when I want it to calm down.

The sound of battle roused Darrian from his hiding place. Glancing over to see that the lizards were still occupied in their dance the mage crawled on hands and knees towards the new sound. This journey had been a disaster, who would have thought a valley would be so hard to find. Weeks of storms and rain and this morning he awoke to the sound of two large clawed lizards screaming and lunging at one another not ten feet from his campsite. But if the rumours were true ... Gromril. Meteoric iron fused with gold, a priceless substance nearly lost to the mists of time. Darrain poked his head out through the trees to get a better look - an elf and three humans had encircled a hydra. Glowing with magical power one swung mightily at the creatures foremost head, severing it clearly. Another struck at the beasts flanks while a large wolf harried its underbelly. The dwarf shook his head, they didn't know what they were dealing with - the creature would only grow stronger. Flailing left and right the hydra sought to trample its foes, biting with its four remaining heads, it's wounds knitting closed almost faster than they could be inflicted. It's teeth found both Ylva and Ka'lion, though the strange field around the latter seemed to deflect the worst of the creatures assault. A woman nearby shouted encouragement, her voice stirring the fire of battle in Darrians belly, but as he moved to better see the action the elven archer looked back sharply towards his position - weapon at the ready. Tag all(INIT: Maddy, Vadania, Ylva, Aelos, Darrian, Ka'lion, Fellbeast)(No attacks during total defence - it's a standard action. I'll assume you wanted to fight defensively instead. As its a critical i've applied it to one of the three heads attacking Ka'lion - you wouldn't have crippled it anyway)
Ka'lion takes 9 points of damage, Ylva takes 7 Hydra is down to four heads
Madaline is using Inspire Courage - everyone gains a +2 moral bonus to attack and damage rolls.

Darrian rolls Init: +2 +[dice=20] = 9
The archer's gaze takes him off his balance for just a moment. He wasn't expecting notice just yet with the beast at their attention... After another moment, he regains his composure and waits.
While he bides his time for the correct opportunity to engage, he scans the party once more, summing up their strengths and weaknesses as best he can.
He is cautious about his demeanor and action, as the archer who has spotted him has not made clear her intent. He reckons any sensible person would handle the problem of the hydra at hand before making new enemies. Just the same, he has met travelers on his journey that take any rationale out of that line of reasoning.
At this point, his goal is clear, and just like the many hardships and obstacles prior, determination and resilience will make this one, an unexpected meeting with a group and a hydra, another pebble in the dust laden road at his back.
OOC: It may take me a bit to get into the rhythm of play by post, especially rules wise, as it has been a while since I've done a 3.5 game and this is my first play by post. Thanks. I'm glad to be joining in! :-)[rand=3243231994565576397639336227439347908193848561496707829108228907]

Initiative: [dice=20]Not certain if people are in need of healing or not, if they do, try and reach them and spontaneous cast cure light wounds (sack bless) otherwise attack the hydra. Giving rolls for both: Cure Light Wounds
Defensive casting (in case in threatening reach) [dice=20]+11 = 25 For [dice=08]+4 = 11
Attack
[dice=20]+3 = 7 for [dice=08]+1 = 8

Deciding that a Dwarf is much less threat than a fellbeast, Vadania turns back to the fight, though she still listens for what the Dwarf is doing. Calling to the dwarf over her shoulder, "How did you get past the leapers?"
While waiting for the dwarf to answer, she fires another arrow at the fell beast. Hit[dice=20]+6=8 Damage[dice=8][rand=04668773245066404010705221677199006871583844535052828460843744687736]

The creatures initial surprise and the groups attack and the magic that dazzled it appeared to be wearing off, the heads moving with more purpose as many eyes seek their targets. Aelos ducks under the beasts tail as it turns once more to strike at Ka'lion, reaching out to heal the wounded Ylva. He could see the barbarian was also bleeding and moved towards him while Ylva remaining in a flanking position. Ka'lion struck the creature with as much force as he could muster, but each wound began to close the instant it was inflicted leaving little more than shallow scars in the lizards tough hide. (Tag Ylva & Darrian)(Ka'lion gets 4hp from the rage, it's +4 con. Don't forget you get an extra point of damage for holding your axe 2-handed while raging) Namklin you can see character statuses at any time at this link : kmansadventures.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=char&thread=8730&page=1

"I actually know not how I made it past their gaze.", Darrian yells back toward the elf, akwardly at first, but then in a clear deep voice follows with, " I was certain they had me in their grasp, despite my attempts to track their movements and watch for opportunities."
"But fair elf, we can take the proper time for acquaintance and the telling of tales after the current obstacle is behind us!" he chimes in cheerily after. "For now, a beast of the fell awaits our focus..." Darrian finishes, with a malice in his voice and a dark gaze in his eyes.
[dice=20] + 8 = 20 knowledge arcana to know what beast he faces
As he speaks, he steps just out of the thicket of the trees. He begins to cast Mage Armor to ready himself for battle.
He keeps behind the elf though, knowing that he is very vulnerable without his proper equipment. He wonders again what horrible reasoning led him to be out here without it...
Mage Armor grants +4AC for 2hrs, giving Darrian 16AC (because he doesn't have his gear, otherwise he'd have something to grant him higher AC).[rand=57778848614543683227245667949319617383708478882924546083877794445]

I was hoping the wizard would mention that the leapers were fighting each other. That would let Vadania know that the forest is much safer than fighting a regenerating fell beast!

20 knowledge arcana to know what beast he faces Darrian recognises it from his studies, it's a hydra - or a close approximation. As each head is severed two more will soon take its place - fire, acid, even cold can interrupt the process though it varies from beast to beast and if the whole neck is not sealed the desired effect will not be achieved. Darrian glances back into the forest, his pack and all it's belongings still within. [Tag Ylva](If you write out your your 900gp of equipment you can sneak back into the forest to grab some of it - of course there is always the risk you will be spotted. Spell scrolls, potions, etc as DMG or I can post a few cheap items from the magical item compention your way)

Ka'lion has been expecting the head to grow back - has it yet? But it's time to retreat into the cover of the trees if possible - may be leapers in them are hungry for hydra? This round Ka'lions retreating while defensive fighting - I don't remember what backing up movement is.

I read the thread but missed that the leapers were fighting each other. Thanks Joe! :-)
"You know, with the leapers in the trees occupied with their own quarrels now, a retreat to the safety of the thicket might be wiser than facing the hydra before us. Each head lost will re-spawn as two, unless we stop the growth, of which I am not certain on the means to do so. The leapers may come to a resolution, but even they may be an easier combatant than the monstrosity before us. But, it is your call, elf, I will trust you know what to do here, and I will, for the time being, follow your lead. Having a companion or more on my journey could prove quite helpful," adds Darrian to his introductions.
He is ready for a fight if needed, but returning to his gear, which he hastily left in bad judgement when he heard the cry to "RUN!", would be the better of the options in his mind.
He adds in a shout towards the others at the hydra's feet , "That beast before you only grows in strength as it's heads are taken, so be wary!"
I'll work on getting al least the major parts of my gear together for later in the weekend. I may hold off on some of the details if I don't find much time, but armor, weapons, and major magical items will be taken care of soon.

That was all Vadania needed to hear. "Retreat into the woods!" she called out, adding the call for Ylva to break off and join her as she backed up behind the cover of the trees.

Ylva withdraws, leaving Ka'lion and Aelos to take the brunt of the Fellbeasts wrath. The purple light around the pair flickers and crackles as it pushes the creatures blows aside time and again but neither emerge unscathed.
For a moment the creature had appeared staggered by the attacks, but now appears to be rapidly growing in strength - the only sign of injury it's missing head where new growth is already beginning.
Madaline pulls a flask, nearly identical to the one carried by the faceless warrior from Westerbrook, "get away! this'll slow im!"
Ka'lion pulls away, though his blood runs hot calling for him to attack. Vadania also steps back into the trees pausing to consider her next action - it would take precious seconds for Aelos to withdraw safely where he would be exposed to the full fury of the beast.
[tag all except Ka'lion (who is withdrawing this round)] Vadania has made a move action into the trees and has her standard action still left. Madaline is holding her action until Aelos is clear.
(Ka'lion takes 5 points of damage, Aelos takes an unconfirmed critical for 7)

Aelos also begins to withdraw. "Hope this works," he says as he tries to move to safety.
I can't remember how withdraw works, but assume I can get out safely. Hopefully.

Being out of spells, there isn't much Vadania can do to help magically. The cantrips she memorized are useful for survival in the fell, but not for distracting fell beasts! Having nothing more that she can do, she lets fly with another arrow, hoping it will provide a moment of distraction. Hit:[dice=20]+6= 10 Damage:[dice=8] As the arrow flies in the general direction of the Hydra, Vadania asks the dwarf, " Do you have any way to distract that thing long enough for Aelos to retreat?"[rand=17265204014256597095329544972628367836144531611353006982450606301427]

Aelos knocks a head aside with his shield and then runs, ducking under a strike from the hydra as he does so. Steeling himself for the hydras charge he catches sight of something flying past his head and then a flash of heat and fire from behind, followed by the enraged screams of the Hydras four heads. Madalines flask strikes true, throwing up a blast of flame against the creatures chest. It reels back and thrashes, and while it does not seem badly hurt it buys enough time for everyone to back into cover. A moment later the creature charges forwards once more, knocking aside several small trees as its many heads snake inwards trying to reach the group, but it is either unable or unwilling to push a way around the larger trees ... for now. [Tag All] I can't remember how withdraw works, but assume I can get out safely. Hopefully. It's a full action double move that treats the square you start in as non-threatened. You can take it as a standard action if something is restricting you actions in which case you move only normal distance.

Darrian hesitates on casting another of his few spells he has prepared for the day, but as the creature bursts into flames he deems it the correct opportunity to find cover rather than to attempt to further slow the beast.
"Elf, I think the flames licking its flesh will do better than any magic I can offer!" yells Darrian as he turns and makes his way at a light sprint into the trees, all the while trying to keep his sight on the others and any threats in the thicket.
[dice=20] + 0 = 7 spot to keep an eye on various things, I fear he looses track of any details worth noticing...
