As the group prepare to move the shadow creature rushes in again, clawing at Ka'lion (4 damage), hissing in clear frustration and making relatively little effort to defend itself this time.

Ka'lion hits the shadow with the ax then takes a five foot step backward to stay with the group. When Aelos returns the hammer Ka'lion will give him the ax.

The axe passes through the creature, or rather the less dense shadow that seems to surround a darker core. Though it does not appear injured it does seek to evade Ka'lions blows and does not simply ignore them.

Having taken a few steps forward Vadania can see what awaits them ahead - a spiralling staircase upwards.

When they get somewhere safe Ka'lion will put on the magic armor for the short term.4.1

Vadania is much confused at finding a stairway up with no way to continue on this level. The crack they had started in had looked like it had happened long after these chambers where built, but strangely it connected to a man made tunnel that would have otherwise been a dead end. And now stairs upwards, back to the lower levels of the newer construction.

Out load she said, "It appears we've found an exit already. Let's check it out and see where it emerges."6.0

"Go slowly it's hard walking up stairs backwards. Or we charge to the top. What do you want to do?" asks Ka'lion, "Give the mask to Aelos in wolf form we can get to the top in record time."4.1

No light can be seen up the stairs, though sound echoes down from a distant source. Anyone ascending would be highly vulnerable to attack as they reached the top.

The shadow below continues to watch and wait for another opening, still frustrated by something.

Does the narrow corridor leads directly into the narrow stairway, or does the corridor open up into a room that contains the staircase?safari

It opens up slightly, enough for someone to stand aside and let others past. It's a spiral staircase made of stone and looks to be relatively intact given the damage to the hall around it.

With one of the walls mostly caved in it's possible there was more to this part of the structure in the past, indeed the structure of the staircase itself may have been what prevented the entire corridor from caving in.

Ka'lion can make out a rustling noise beyond the shadow. It doesn't match any sound the creature has made so far, perhaps it is a different foe - blocking off the escape while the party is stalled.[rand=93851717900500612621195713271735650861146439779318106517240980883]

Does Ka'lion want to put on the armor before going up the stairs? Doing so will mean he can't access his druid abilities for 24 hours if I remember right.safari

Putting on the armor should have no effect on his shapeshifting. Wearing armor is a fighter feat which he has. I don't think he'd be limited by it. Those are old rules from older games. I seem to of forgotten to write them down on my character sheet though. So I'll need to add them. Wearing armor however does reduce his speed, which is why I hate it in part - he also wants to advance as a monk and that requires no armor. But not yet. He is also currently carrying a heavy load minus 200 feet of rope - so he's lost 20 pounds, added the book the weapons, so he should be about 7 pounds less weight wise. Aelos is currently carrying the magic armor and hammer. I think which slows Ka'lion down to the parties unarmored speeds unless he has taken wolf form. Even if he was wearing the armor he'd lose the armors protection when in wolf form. I think that's how all that adds up. Right now however I think the books protecting us with a protection from evil cycle. That may be why the creatures don't like to books light.

The magic armor is metal armor. Here are some quotes from the 3.5 druid rules:

Druids are proficient with light and medium armor but are prohibited from wearing metal armor...

A druid who wears prohibited armor or carries a prohibited shield is unable to cast druid spells or use any of her supernatural or spell-like class abilities while doing so and for 24 hours thereafter.

So like I said, if he puts on the magic armor he'll lose his shapeshifting and spells for a day. Unless the kind of druid you are is different in this regard, I only have the rules for the original druid.

The question remains, does Ka'lion want to put on the armor here or not?safari

Ka'lion cannot be sure what effect donning the armour would have on his shapechanging but Vadania is more familiar with the supernatural restrictions such powers bring.
Without the mask Ka'lion has little sense of what form of pact he has entered into in return for the magic that he wields.

In any event Ka'lion is in no position to don armour without first squeezing past Aelos to a safer spot.

Ka'lion is not putting on the armor until they get where they are going. It takes time to put on armor and he's not going to get sucker punched again.

Vadania said to the others, "Same order up the stairs, keep a lookout for surprises. Ka'lion, keep an eye out for that shadow following us. You're the fastest, so you're the best we have for keeping a watch behind us without falling behind."

With that Vadania started making her way up the stairs with Ylva right behind her.

Vadania advances upwards, the twisting stairs allowing little light from the lantern to reach up.

Below the shadow watches the ascent and then vanishes once more - Ka'lion gives warning and Vadania is alert enough to duck behind her shield as a claw slashes down from above - still on the stairs with her head just above ground level the elf can just about make out the shape of the shadow creature as it appears before her but is poorly placed to strike back.

Ka'lions attention is drawn back to the noises behind them, suddenly louder and clearer as the source becomes apparent - new a wave of the demons the group had fought before now seeks to squeeze through into the corridor.

Ka'lion stands on the lowest steps, Aelos and Ylva half way up.

Ka'lion darts up the steps to Aelos location and holds his attack until the creatures are in reach. Besides it is easier to knock things down the stairs. "Aelos keep moving as fast as you can! More are behind us!"4.1

Aelos cannot move any higher as Vadania and Ylva block his path. Seeing that the elf is in trouble though he casts an Aid spell upon Vadania - hopefully enough to let her weather the initial attacks as she ascends the stairs.
