Vadania continues to wait in ambush.
OOC: Yay! a new player! Now all we have to do is introduce him without someone's character getting killed....

Vadania and Ka'lion watch the shadow grow closer, moving slowly, cautiously, and quietly before stopping near the bottom of the stairs as best as they can guess.
Garrot finds the stairs untrapped, but as he nears the bottom he finds the source of the hum - an open iron door leads to a room lined with mirrors in which he can see the reflections of two human-sized individuals in leather armour and a wolf, waiting just inside the door.

Duh! Hide behind the door in a room full of mirrors... I should have realized that wasn't going to work. Though now I'm glad it didn't

Garrot looks down at the mirrors and a large portion of his inner-self argues that he should just turn around and walk away. Clearly this isn't the abandoned tower he thought he might find easy plunder in.
He turns to leave, and then the remainder of his inner-self (the one that usually gets him in all kinds of trouble) chimes in and convinces him that he really, really needs to see what is down there...Mirrors!
With a sigh (and a rueful "I told you so to his conservative inner-self") he turns around and says aloud "Oy, hey, I can see you two and your dog. I mean no harm.....I am merely a treasure hunter inspecting ruins! Don't sic your dog on me if you don't mind. May I come down?"

Ka'lion glances around the room on the off chance that the stairway has any influence on the room ( a little like the light going on at night when people approach a house. Ka'lion smiles looking at the mirrors. It was a stupid idea here.)
Ka'lion moves into the open and puts his weapons away. "Put your toy's away and come into the light. We could use some help but right now we are not working for profit. We are not even being paid right now. But we came here hoping to find something useful. I'm Ka'lion, Vadania is my captain so if you can stay is up to her. The wolf is her bodyguard."

Garrot grins from ear to ear and puts away his daggers. He runs down the remaining stairs and moves quickly to each party member, grabbing their hand and shaking it quickly, all the while rapidly talking "I'm Garrot, I am a treasure hunter extraordinaire! What is the dog's name? What are your names? Ohhhh look at that pool! Mirrors! Hey what is that writing on the mirrors?"
He pauses, panting heavily and looks back at the two (and their doggy) and says "what is this place, its neat! I've never seen water like that!(pointing at the quicksilver pool)."

"I don't think it's water. I think it's QUICKSILVER. It's poisonous if I remember my grandmothers teachings correctly. But I've never heard of so much of it in one place before. Of course it could be something else as will. I'd need a detect poison spell to be cast on it to be sure." said Ka'lion Knowledge arcane +5+roll:[dice=20]=16

Vadania commented, "I don't think it's water or quicksilver. I think it's a magical portal that is slowly failing. Someone went though us before us. He expected to return, for he made sure the door would not accidentally close and lock."
Changing tone, she continued, "I'm Vadania. Ylva is my friend, not my bodyguard. Pleased to meet you Garrot. Unless you want to try your luck going though the portal, there doesn't seem to be anything useful in here."

"Captain, I know you love your companion, but he is your guard. I didn't summon a companion when I became a druid. Nor did I ask you to teach me how to do so. There is a simple reason why not. It's an issue of free will. Wolves mate for life - you do her a disservice not setting her free. But she's impressed on you - just like baby ducks follow their mother where ever she leads. If I had a companion. I make it a pony or a horse. But I would not keep the animal to protect me. I'd keep the animal for transportation and not deliberately be putting them in danger protecting me. But no matter. He's your companion, not mine. I still need some parchment so I can make a copy of the Glyphs around the mirrors. After I have Where are we going next? Through the portal, up the stairs as ambassadors - which neither of us are qualified for or somewhere else?" asks Ka'lion

Vadania chuckled. Ka'lion definitely didn't understand what it meant have an animal companion. She tried to explain, "Ylva and I are friends. Yes, she protects me, but I protect her as well. Just as you and I have protected each other as best we can. There is no magical compulsion on Ylva, she could leave me if she wished to."
OOC: I realize this may not be correct according to the PHB, but it's how Vadania sees their relationship.
She continued, "As for where to go next, I'm not inclined to use a portal to I know not where. I may not be suited for the role of ambassador, but at least I know the hazards along the way."
OOC: She may think she knows the hazards, but she knows nothing about political intrigue.
"How about you Garrot? How are you with talking to people?"

The book says you can release your companion at any time and preform a 24 hour ritual to replace them. In theory that means you can change your companion anytime you want to. It doesn't harm the animal or you when it's done. I've just never seen anyone do it. I will say it would be a great deal more fun playing a druid that way.

Vadania is based on a picture in the PHB. That picture includes a wolf, so Vadania has a wolf companion

sites back to changing the rolls when you use the modify post.
Nothing more I can do with the script - the site should keep rolls as long as you don't delete/remake dice rolls inbetween edits but it's a bit flakey - it's getting extra numbers pulled in from somewhere deeper in the proboard code that I can't touch.
For future reference - Ka'lion can't summon an animal companion anyway, one of the limitations of the masks powers

I haven't made up my mind about next level - I may take a level as a normal druid, or as a barbarian or even a level or two as a ranger - which ever I take it will be to further the goal of gaining the shapshifter prestige class. requires +3 to attack bonus, concentration 10, and an alternate form - so really the only thing holding him back after next level is the concentration skill. I like the idea of changing animal companions when something else would prove more useful. This political adventure is not something my character is designed for and I see no advantage for my character at this time to do it. But he's not going to leave the elf to drown - figuratively speaking that is.

Garrot watches the conversation between the two big people with some confusion, and then looks at Vadania and says "Oh I love talking to people. I speak Elven, Goblin and Common! I like talking to people because they always have neat things in their pockets and in their houses! Sometimes though People don't seem to like sharing, so many times I have to leave because people are rude about sharing things."
Garrot looks around again and wanders over to the Glyphs and says This writing is neat! I like to try and read things too!" Garrot then squeezes up his face comically and stares at the glyph intently for an extended period of time. It looks as if his body is seized up as he focuses on the glyph.

They seem more like magical glyphs than writing - either to sustain the portal or contain anything that might come through. It was even possible that they might contain spells of destruction set to trigger and destroy the orbs should the wrong kinds of indibiduals intrude on the room.
Garrot magical knowledge is limited but for now the glyphs, magical or not, seem inert. His attention is drawn more to the pool, if it is a portal it may be just what he's been looking for.

Shaking his head at the Glyphs, Garrot sees the silvery pool in the reflection and his attention is immediately drawn to it. As he jogs towards the pool he looks at Vadenia and says "I have been there I think! What about you? Where are you from, what do you folks do?"As he is talking, he rushes toward the pool and bends down to inspect it closely. He says "Shiny! and immediately shoves his hand down into the pool! Ka'lion continues to watch the glyphs, thinking the new comer is either foolish or daring. He'll make up his mind latter.

Garrot reaches for the pool but it vanishes, and then a few moments later it appears again, and then vanishes - in time to the hum from the orbs.
Waiting for it to spin around to face him once more Garrot reachs out again, this time poking the pool with an arrow as it appears within reach. As the pool vanishes once more Garrot finds himself left with only half of an arrow.
Another pause, another arrow, this time into the pool and back out again before it vanishes. This arrow is unharmed, clearly the quicksilver does not disintigrate whatever is pushed through but anything caught as it vanishes is lost... somewhere.
Garrot tosses the arrow through as the pool appears again wondering what becomes of anything that passes through, or if it would ever be seen again.
