Can we try out the belt while we are still injured to see what it does? Garrot caught the belt's command word when the shaman used it near him, and the simple device doesn't take long to figure out. As a continuous effect it grants a +2 insight bonus to heal checks. Using the command word however it heals 2d8 points of damage to the wearer or whoever they touch, up to three times per day (and this can also be used to harm undead). Optionally all three charges can be expended in a single turn healing 4d8 points instead. Charges are restored each dawn. Vadania feels that Garrot should get the belt. That gives everyone in the group some sort of healing they can do. Besides, since it came off a goblin, it probably fits him the best, though the two slim women could probably wear it if Garrot didn't want it. Which brings up the question, how often can Lynette use her healing ability? I have no idea what class she is (which is fine, Vadania is not world wise). Lynette can heal at any time, but only up to half hitpoints with no limit on it's use. She can also control ice magic to a degree allowing her to add a single point of cold damage to the weapons of nearby allies or shield them against the cold, she can project bolts of freezing cold across short distances, and add a little cold damage to extra her own weapon. Her more powerful ice magic is more limited, a combination of spellcasting, her cape, and her ability to push her natural powers to greater levels for short periods of time - though overdoing it exhausts her as it did during the battle. Finally she can boost the healing of herself and others (though only magic, not wands, scrolls, or the new belt). It adds 8 points to all heal spells (including ability score healing) but she can only use that, her major weapon enchantment, and another as yet unseen ability 3 times each day. When Vadania seeks to learn to control elemental lightning Lynette teaches her the magic of the thunder cape she wears - Vadania finds that she can call upon it's power to enhance her own (3 times per day when a creature takes lightning damage from one of your spells you can expend a charge to inflict an extra +d6 to that one target). Lynette notes that the cape is old and faded, and that with work it's power might be restored somewhat. While it has it's limits, Vadania sees this as the groups most powerful healing. With even a short rest between fights, no one need start below half HP. During and healing 1 HP per round during battle when badly wounded is priceless. I don't think we would have survived that last battle without it! Even when healing magic is available, Lynette could bring everyone up to half HP before using the other magic. Vadania will be sure to tell Lynette how valuable she is to the group! And with extra boost from the clock, the call lightning is even more likely to be Vadania's default 3rd level spell. She'll also tell Garrot how valuable he is. We couldn't have even gotten to the fight without his artifact! And he's a far better melee combatant than Vadania is! One thing I'm still not clear on is how good Lynette is with her sword? Is she as good at hitting as Garrot? as bad as Vadania? Or somewhere in between? Potions are good, since anyone can use those. Are there also healing scrolls available? Only Vadania can use those, but they're half the price of potions. Also, can Vadania make healing scrolls? I think not, but I'm not sure. No scrolls until the priest arrives but just to be clear - the 1000gp of potions are free, you don't need to pay for them. They didn't bring much in the way of cash with them when they fled and can only pay with services, though the monastery does contain significant wealth if it could be retaken.. Payment in potions is quite acceptable! Vadania will thank them for their generosity! 20 cure light wounds potions, plus the belt, plus Lynette's healing will leave the group well stocked with healing! Vadania won't need to use cure light wounds for all of her 1st level spells after all. I do need to remember to use the spells and feats I have though. I forgot about point blank feat (though I don't think any targets were within 20 feet). But I forgot to cast barkskin on someone before going in. And I had bulls strength I could have used also. Her wolf form is considerably weaker that Ylva, since Vadania would be a 2HD wolf (with 5th level HP), while Ylva is a 4HD wolf. You retain your normal BAB, saves, etc. You just don't get the AC/stat bonuses that Ylva does for being an animal companion. Vadania is familiar with wolves, crocodiles(or the fell equivalent), leopards, eagles, dire hawks, bears, boars, dire badgers, bats, and weasels, lizards, both kinds of snakes, and the common wolverine. Thanks! That's a much longer list than I was expecting and gives her quite a variety. I'll add that to the character sheet. I think BAB is adjusted by the difference in STR. So a wolf form would give her +1 BAB because it's stronger, but she'd loose the +1 for the magic sword. As a black bear, she'd have a much higher BAB and do more damage. But animal AC is lower than normal for her, so she'll get hit more often. Still, actually being able to talk to her wolf friend will be a big bonus Yet another question, has the priest from burr town made it here yet? Without Ka'lion around, he could be a helpful ally. He and Altar arrive after a few days of rest to hand out the next adventure hooks He'll also be able to scribe scrolls for the party for free (materials allowing) but it still takes the normal amount of time. As if we didn't already have plenty of adventure hooks! Existing quests that Vadania is interested in is improving her wooden longsword (which required 5th level), retrieving the underwater treasure (now that we can breath underwater, or perhaps using the artifact if we can make it watertight), recover the magic weapon from the lizard man valley tomb, and perhaps check out the other side of that portal we found (and hope that Ka'lion doesn't come by and lock the door while we're inside). And of corse, take back the monastery (which is perhaps the most time critical), along with other means of thwarting the demon. Vadania is hoping he can offer some insight as to what that enchanted canvas will do if left exposed to the moonlight. Also, it's probably time for Vadania to try figuring out what those magic crystals do. She can learn from Garrot how to activate them, and then try them with her weapons and armor to see what they do.

One thing I'm still not clear on is how good Lynette is with her sword? Is she as good at hitting as Garrot? as bad as Vadania? Or somewhere in between? Better than Vadania would have expected, she seems to have had some formal training with her rapier and quick reflexes. In terms of raw skill and experience Vadania estimates that the entire group is roughly equal with speed, strength, and choice of weapon separating them. (despite a +5 dex bonus Garrot doesn't have the finesse feat - he is at heart a thief)

So Lynette and Ylva are our best melee fighters while Garrot and Vadania are best with ranged attacks (other than it's hard to sneak attack with a ranged attack).

(having peered over my item notes)
Between the seer here and the priest when he arrives the other lesser items the group carries can be identified.
The three crystals chained to Garrots spear have the following functions - (one at any given time, they need to be physically swapped) 1) +d6 damage to undead 2) magical light (20ft light, 40ft shadowy illumination) 3) returning - the weapon can be called from up to 30ft away provided this crystal is attached.
The convex blue lens the group has carried for so long is finally deciphered, and summons a floating platform when activated. The effect lasts only three hours each day and the disk holds 300 pounds. It strays no more than 30 feet from the owner of the lens.
The glowing reddish crystal seems similar in all regards to those carried by Garrot's spear but do not seem to function when held against weapons. However when held against a suit of armour it does take hold - and after poking and prodding with various weapons the group ultimately find that it protects the armour and it's wearer from fire, though only for a limited time (resist fire 10, max 50pts per day).
Finally the wand emits a beam of cold, capable of freezing water deeply enough to walk upon and magically extinguishing all natural fires in it's path. The rod functions out to a distance of about 10 yards but after experimentation it ceases to work - the group fear they have exhausted it's power but the following day it seems to have regained it once more (2 uses a day this one, 2d6 damage to all creatures in a 30ft line, ref DC14 for half. The ice it creates is thick enough for even a horse to walk upon, but not the construct).

Great, I think that identifies everything other than the Tarp from the construct. I figure we'll be roleplaying that one. It may come down to spending it out and seeing what happens some night.
The SRD says Flaming Sphere of "It can be extinguished by any means that would put out a normal fire of its size". So Vadania will experiment to see if the wand of cold can extinguish her flaming sphere. Also the SRD says save vs. no damage rather than half damage. Not complaining, just figuring out how this spell will work when Vadania uses it in combat.
I haven't heard from Garrot's player since we finished the last fight. Hope he's still around!

I haven't heard from Garrot's player since we finished the last fight. Hope he's still around! Not logged in since 24th. The wand does indeed negate any flaming sphere spell in it's path.

Update - looks like sageaqua will be rejoining the party, which means Eldon/Altar won't be for now.

Not expecting Eldon and Altair to rejoin the party in any case, but Vadania would like to talk to Eldon about the canvas and the book that includes drawings with the same pattern. She's hoping he can tell her what that canvas will do when it's left in the moonlight long enough.

Sorry guys, had to go out of town for the holidays! I am still here. I will level up my character today. I am happy to share any loot with any character that needs it.
Question: Present hit points are 23. I get another HD this level (6d6). Do I simply roll one more die and add that to my present number?
If so here is the roll: whtBY3rPp_1-61-6

Garrot will blush at the compliment and will tell Vadania he is glad to be of service, as this has been a very fun adventure indeed. He will defer to elf on what path to choose next. His objective is to see as much of the world as possible!
I see where BAB increases with levels, does ranged modifiers or bonus increase too?

I see where BAB increases with levels, does ranged modifiers or bonus increase too? Going from 4th to 5th level rogue has no effect on Garrot's attack bonuses. Actually he doesn't change at all aside from hitpoints, skillpoints, and 3d6 sneak attack.

Vadania suggests that Lynette and Garrot each take 8 healing potions while Vadania takes 4. That may change if Vadania gets more cure scrolls.

You can take potions other than healing potions if you want - any combination up to 1000gp.
I'll post up a new thread a little later today hopefully and on to the next adventure.

What cloak did Garrot end up with? I didn't see it on his sheet.

I believe I ended up with the dark blue/black one with the moon. I seem to recall the folks reacting to it strangely.
Also, while we are awaiting our next move, do I have the opportunity to look around for any items? Specifically I am looking for some armor more suited to a halfling thief and perhaps a better bow/arrows.

The merchant is still here, the blacksmith can do some degree of work, and the priestess is willing to exchange minor items and some of Garrot's potion allocation for what they have available - it's not much, but an eternal wand (2 castings of a 1st level spell each day), vest of resistance, or even eyes of minute seeing are within Garrot's reach.
The blacksmith can also change the enchantment on Garrot's armour for a small fee - see the other post.

Vadania will gladly accept any potions offered, but doesn't have any suggestions for potions other than healing. If either Garrot or Lynette have different potions they prefer, or have suggestions for the group, Vadania will go with that.

A vest of resistance grants a +1 resistance bonus to all saves. Eyes(goggles) of minute seeing give a +5 competence bonus on search checks to find traps and other concealed objects.
