The group makes their way into the cave, with Harknail in the front lighting the way with his glowing shield. No one is surprised when two roars fill the cave. Still, only Bennegar and Barbatos react before the Cave Bears charge. OOC: To speed things along, I rolled init for everyone. Only Benny and Baratos beat the cave bears init.Map (updates as positions change)

Barbatos acts quickly to slow one of the creatures down - one bear at a time was more than enough.

The bear's thick fur and large mass protected mostly it from the cold, but that didn't help it when the ground turned slick and it's feet slid out from under it. A sheen of ice covered the area between the bear and Harknail.
OOC: It did full damage, just didn't affect it much due to lots of HP.

((Sorry for any delays; I've been really busy and I didn't realize we'd switched threads, since my RSS feed screwed up and didn't notify me of the last posts in the last thread.)) ((Standard Action > Erupting Flare - 1d20 + 7=8 vs FORT.)) Bennegar notices his ally's tactics and targets the closer bear with his most basic flame spell. He holds his tome outward toward the beast and a tiny ember floats forth, quite quickly. If it lands, it erupts into multiple flames on the beast, scorching the immediate area for a short while. IF it doesn't, it sputters out before reaching its target. ((Also, as a reminder, if anyone uses an Action Point, I can make fun things happen once per encounter. Just FYI. =D ))

Bennegar's mote of flame fizzles out before it reaches the cave bear.
The first cave bear moseys over to Harknail and takes a swipe at him with its wicked looking claws (hits AC 21), but Harknail was expecting this and catches the blow on his shield (AC 23).
The second cave bear tries to reach Harknail as well, but needs to pick itself up and make its way carefully across the slick floor. It's claws dig into the ice giving it firm footing, but at the expense of speed. It only gets halfway to Harknail before the rest of the team reacts.
OOC: #1 missed and Barbatos was successful in slowing down the second case bear.

Since the cave bears seem to already be heading his way, Harknail doesn't need to grab their attention. So he holds position, issues a Divine Challenge to the nearest cave bear, then attempts a Righteous Smite to charge himself and his allies with divine energy. Unfortunately, his attack misses. Just barely, but still a miss.
OOC: Harknail would have hit AC 19

The bears were clearly resistant to brute force so Barbatos opted for more subtle magics, a sleep spell. bV|clZKnp_1-20+9 vs will, bear 1 p_1-20+9 vs will, bear 2 Slowed regardless of hit or miss, save ends. If hit and the save is failed the bear is knocked out. Barbatos will use his orb to impose a -2 on the saves of bear 2Deciding the second bear is still too close and the sleep spell perhaps too slow Barbatos then moved up behind Harknail to push the creature along the slick ice and back into the cave, confident that his magic would allow him to withdraw should the creature resist and charge. Move to E10, Action point, thunderwave on bear 2 p_1-20+12 vs fort p_1-3+6 thunder damage and pushed back to J5 on hit. Plus Bennegar's special ability ?
(Wasn't feeling brave enough to target both bears with that in case I fluffed my attack - moonstride at the ready if the bear moves into an adjacent square. Also yay good rolls )1-201-201-201-3

Barbatos slows both of the bears with his Sleep spell, then sends one of them sliding across the the ice just before it melts with a Thunderwave. Bennegar's chaotic magic triggers (REfBmXTLp_1-6) as the Thunderwave goes off, making the more distant bear an easy target.
OOC: Seeds of Chaos causes bear #2 to grant combat advantage until the end of Barbatos' next turn.1-6

Stravanya doesn't recognize what type of bear this is, so she just has her general knowledge of bears to go on. These are big bears, and bears are known for their toughness. There are stories of hunters that killed a bear, but the bear didn't notice until after the hunter was dead.
You also had Flanking, so you hit AC 30
The toughness of the bear was apparent. A blow that would have killed a Ravenous Wolf was barely noticed by the bear.
OOC: In other words, the bear has a lot more HP than a level 1 wolf...

lance of faith on bear #1.
+9 to hit due to advantage. so it is 9+HPrAEzAmp_1-20= 18 vs ref
giving beeny +2 to his first attack if I hit with my attack.
damage p_1-8+5 damage= 13.
Zem once more fires off holy light into his foe.1-201-8

Unfortunately, being flanked only grants advantage to the creatures doing the flanking. So Stravanya and Harknail get +2, but Zem does not. As a result Zem just barely misses the bear. Zem will hit with a roll of 10 (55% chance to hit)
With agility surprising for a creature so large, the bear dodges the lance of light.

OOC: I posted for Bennegar, then thought I saw a miss from Bennegar so I deleted it, then saw that the miss was for the previous round. So adding it back here:
Bennegar approached and used a Weapon Master's strike to punish the bear if it shifts away. Hit barely hits, but for a substantial blow (13 damage).
The surrounded bear (#1) flies into a frenzy, spinning and striking at all nearby. Harknail: H1u5CsxKp_1-20+10=26 Stravanya: p_1-20+10=11 Bennegar: p_1-20+10=16
The bear gets a solid blow on Harknail (13 HP), misses Stravanya completely, and almost hits Bennegar. The bear then shifts out of being surrounded.
Bennegar was waiting for that and surprised the bear with an attack from Lizzy the Sword (spear) for 12 damage.
Then, exhausted by it's frenzy (or by Barbatos's sleep spell), the bear curls up and goes to sleep.
The other bear (#2) charges the pesky wizard that's been keeping it away from it's prey. Attack: p_1-20+11=27
But Barbatos changes into moonlight and retreats out of harms way, evading the claws that would have ripped him open.
Then that bear also curls up and goes to sleep.1-201-201-201-20

Harknail lifts his sword arm and prepares to do a coup de grace on the nearest bear. Then he pauses and asks, "Do we just move on while the bears sleep, or do we slay them now in case we need to retreat this way?"
OOC: Not time for discussion, but you can offer quick opinions. There is no one right answer here, it's more about how your character feels about animal lives.

( so both bears are asleep? )
Zems reaction is to spare them, they are now defenseless and of no harm to the party. If they were still attacking us he would ok with killing them.
" Don't killem, they can't harm us now. If they wake up and attack we take them out.

"They are man-eaters", observed Barbatos, "a threat to any who would travel these lands. To be so bold as to attack us on sight suggests they have a taste for it."
