The animal aversion spell ends at the same point as the magical concealing spell - animals inside the second part of the cave are unaffected.
Brennen has encountered the spell before in his travels through Merebas, it is a simple warding spell used primarily to keep rats and mice out of food stores - rather than the usual protective abjurations this is in fact a persistent illusion that can only be perceived by beings with animal-like intellect (and - or so he had heard - those sufficiently drunk).

everything seems to be tied to Merebas. The riders, the cave, the scrolls and the magic. Are there and letters written from the former owner of the cave?

Vadania says, "I could summon an Ape, but I don't know enough about apes to change into one to talk to it. I do know bears though, so I could summon a bear, then change into one to tell it to attack the chest. Or if we wait till tomorrow, I can change my spells and just try disenchanting the magical trap."

"What about an elemental, or a fey?" says Brennen.

"The ideal spell would be erase. It's perfect for gylphs if cast as ranged spell but as we've all been near the box and nothings caused it to blow up yet. It may be an illusion and our efforts a waste of our time or it's triggered buy opening the box. I think dispelling it's a good idea." says Ka'lion

Kaolin will loot the dead man outside and call his owls back in. They should of found some game by now. He's give it to the wolf at the cave entrance and then send the owls out to hunt for them selves. Is there water nearby?

The cave is not far from the river the group has been following.
Brennen inspects the symbol on the wall again to ensure it is not some kind of magical ward, but senses nothing unusual about it. The symbol itself does seem vaguely familiar though.
(erase does work against magical traps of this type, but you must touch the rules and make a caster level check that automatically fails on a roll of 1 or 2. In the event of a failure the runes go off. Magical writing cannot be erased at a distance unless you have an ability to extend your touch distance)

"Vedanta. Do these glyphs seem familiar to you? They remind me of the glyphs that blow up in my face by the assassin I tried to kill from the dead village. I owe those people." says Ka'lion, "In which case we are dealing with a fire bomb."

"Vedanta. Do these glyphs seem familiar to you? They remind me of the glyphs that blow up in my face by the assassin I tried to kill from the dead village. I owe those people."says Ka'lion Vadania thinks back, assuming Ka'lion is speaking of Westerbrook, Madalines home. There had indeed been a symbol carved onto the wooden floor. Now that she thinks about it the symbol was not entirely different from the one on the moon-glowing canvas that they had left with Garrot, and if fact she thinks she caught sight of just such a symbol on the papers as Ka'lion riffled through them, perhaps that is what had shaken his memories of the event. Though Vadania observes that the rest of his memory was as suspect as ever given that the rune did not explode - Ka'lion himself had set fire to the inn (and the church). With that thought and his mention of a fire bomb Vadania glances at her travelling companion with nervous anticipation...

Ka'lion set fire to the church and inn to kill the assassin and bugs that killed the villagers. He saved the only survivor Madaine from his own fire. He did what he had to. In the end he almost caught the assassin. If he had rolled better and killed the assassins horse he would of. In any case the assassin was fleeing for his life at the end of that fight. I remember the runes exploding.

I was explaining my memory of events but Ka'lion would have no problem telling the others what he members. He didn't do anything evil just unexpected and he was right. He job was to stop the assassin and to avenge the dead. He didn't worry about the fire being seen - he wanted it to be seen from miles away. It was a bad roll day. I couldn't roll to hit anything above 4. with 8 attacks if I remember correctly.

As I remember it, if we weren't down two combatants (Ka'lion running around trying to burn down the town and Vadania following to stop him), we might have finished off the wizard assassin before he could flee. igniting the barn on fire wouldn't have stopped his retreat, it takes time for buildings to burn, he would have just fled the burning barn.

The actual sequence of events saw a fight against summoned creatures during which Ka'lion abandoned the group to climb into the nearby church. As the party pushed on to get to the summoner himself Ka'lion ran to a nearby barn where he spent the rest of the combat throwing axes at the horse tied up inside before setting the barn (and horse) on fire.
He left the barn in time to see the summoner making off on a newly summoned horse (he had snuck out the back towards to the stable where Ka'lion might have caught him, but the smoke the flames warned him off). Ka'lion then set fire to the church and tried to burn the inn down (Vadania stopped him), but finally played the hero when he went back into the church to save someone inside that was about to burn to death - Madeline the bard.
With all that said - how does the party wish to proceed?

Vadania will wait for Tink to approve the plan of summoning a bear to try opening the chest, alternately we could wait a day and Vadania could try dispelling the magical trap first, at which point there's nothing to keep us from breaking the chest open ourselves.

Waiting a days fine with Ka'lion.
I do remember the combat - Ka'lion didn't set fire to the horse, he couldn't even hit the horse. I almost quite playing the game that day. And Ka'lion would of run down the assassin. He was faster then the aassion was.

(good to go with the bear then? - cast away with whatever precautions or instructions you see fit)

First Vadania will clear out every one from the back room. Vadania will convert her 4th level spell to Summon Nature's Ally and use that to summon a brown bear. Next she will use wild shape to change into a black bear so that she can talk to her summoned bear. She will ask the brown bear to tear open the chest, warning it that it might do something strange.

The bear heads in and, one explosion later, rushes back out again somewhat worse for wear. Inside the chest is open and still relatively intact but the contents (or rather what remains of them) are on fire. Brennen and Tink can detect magic amongst the flames.
