Vadania works the gem free, with none of the arcing energy of her initial attempt. As she feared as soon as the gemstone comes lose the ship sinks like a rock and she returns to the shore with her prize.

"It's nice and shiny if nothing else," remarks Tink.
Brennen will use identify on it.

While Brennen has encountered elemental gems - summoning spells suspended in gem form - this is different, a focus item for a spell similar to magic jar rather than a magical item in its own right.
He has little doubt that shattering the gem would release the elemental inside and suspects that the stone ring the gems were embedded in had some power of its own.
(The gem is not a magical item as such but the specific spell cast upon it can be determined with a spellcraft check)

Tink will also go down and detect magic on the stone ring as well.1-20

The spell in place is beyond Brennens knowledge but clearly of great power and beyond the ability of any spellcaster he has encountered in his travels here in the Steadlands.
Tink can detect magic on the stone ring below. It is faint, most likely needing the energy of the elementals, but still present. Should the gem the party now carries be replaced the ship would likely float once more.

Vadania asks "So how would we use this gem?" Crush it and hope the released elemental goes after our opponents instead of us? We could bring it to theSilver Flame and see what they could make of it."
"Also, where should we go next? Tank, you wanted to go after that demon when you heard about it. Now that Ka'lion isn't here, there is nothing holding us back from following the demon into the desert and seeing what we can do to disrupt its plans."
OOC: In other words, do we want to go on the main adventure quest (fight demons) or continue going on side quests?

"I guess we could make contact with whatsisface," suggests Tink.
"Berith?" says Brennen.
"Right, that guy. I still don't really trust him, but..." she shrugs.

Vadania comments, "Contacting Berith could save us a lot of travel time, but it would help to have an idea of where we wanted to go before we contacted him. Then he could help us get there. For now, we might want to get out of here, unless you want to wait and see who shows up to investigate the storm and fire we caused."

The party are less than a day from Burr Town (south), though the most direct route to Berith would be due east.

How far are we from the Monastery of the Silver Flame? If we want to fight the demon more directly they would be a useful ally. Also we set it up so that we could contact Berith from anywhere, though Vadania would need a nights rest so that she could change her spells to do so.

Two days travel if the party leaves now - Berith stated that he would leave the communication stone in the old lightning-struck tree near the Monastery.

Vadania asked, "So, what do we want to be doing? Do we want to continue roaming around looking for treasure? Or do we want to face the demon more directly? Either way, I would like to go to the Monastery of the Silver Flame. I have a magic hammer that was 1 of the weapons used the fight the demon originally. Ka'lion had sold it, and I bought it back. I'd like to turn it over to someone who could use it the fight the demon. Tink, when you were first released, you seemed ready to take on the demon directly. do you still feel that way?"
OOC: in other words, what do we want to do as a party? Continue on side quests, or try tackling the main quest. Ka'lion was sure that the main quest would kill us, I think waiting just makes the main quest harder.

"Well, you know me, I can take on a pit fiend singlehandedly with both hands tied behind my back, because I'm just that good," says Tink modestly. "But there are always going to be fiends. The important thing is that someone is fighting them, even if it's not us. Still, if we find ourselves in a position to do something personally, then we should. If whatsisface has actionable intelligence, I'm in favor of following up on it."

Vadania suggests, "How about we head over to the Silver Flame Monastery? They are likely to know the most about what the demon is up to and how goes the fight against it since that's the entire purpose of that monastery. That's also close to where Berith was going to leave the communication stones that we can use to contact him."

With their two potential targets so close together the group set out east hoping to make the road by nightfall, though after their last encounter on the road they are careful not to camp too close.
It is late at night, long past nightfall on the second day, that the lights of the Monastery come into view. The party are greeted with food and shelter and news from the east - severals days old now, that Altar, Lynette, and the the others were travelling into the deep desert having navigated the path through to the empire successfully.
Of George and Ka'lion there have been no sighting.

Vadania offers the magic hammer from the room with the magic book and explains it's origins and that it was one of the weapons used by those who fought the demon long ago. If that can be used to fight the demon, though it sounds like it's too late, and that the group fighting the demon is long gone.
To Tink and Brennen Vadanis suggest, "We could retrieve the sending stones and find if Berith could transport us to the others in the desert. I don't like the idea of leaving the fell, but they could probably use some reinforcement."

"My people have a saying: Vastikkimensa hileka belinnit e hastal min resinatadol, sil fostil nasila fenes e mastinnit," says Brennen. "It means, 'The careful hunter chooses well and finishes with a full belly, but the fool wastes arrows and goes hungry.' The desert is a big place, and we won't do any good wandering around just hoping to run into demons. If we're going to hunt this creature, we need a lead first, or we'll waste our proverbial arrows. Let's see if our wizardly contact came up with any information we can go on before we decide."

Vadania replied, "Sorry, I forgot to tell you, the Order of the Silver Flame has a good idea where the demon is going next, another place were a demon is being held. So there is a definite place to go. We can ask for more details while we are here."

The group has a restful night at the monastery. The following morning the priests set about finding what information they can about the hammer and its previous owner while Isolde and the more senior survivors of the siege update the group as to recent events.
To the east messages from Altars group had been necessarily short due to the nature of the magic used but the party had made it safely to civilization. They had matched one of the symbols in their copy of the book to a long dead mage-king and were seeking his tomb. A fresh copy of the book is also produced for Vadania - it was a hasty copy at best, taken from the charcoal rubbing that Altar had made of the original book, but is the best the monastery can provide.
To the west news of the unnatural frost been sent by runners from Burr Town, seeking any knowledge the monastery might have on both the magic and the location of Vadania and the others. From what the priests here had been able to gather the keeper of Burr Towns relics - Vassily - was believed to be in some way behind the weather and had not been seen since the day of the groups last visit to the town.
Finally to the north and south the nations of Woldegard and Merebas marshalled forces near the boarders. Currently neither had marched in number into the Steadlands but the cabal in the ruins of Clearwater was clearly a point of contention and moreover troubles further north had reached the ears of the nobles of Merebas. The goals of either side, and what either might hope to gain from conflict, were unknown to the priests here but for now it seemed like the sudden magical cold and other events within the Fell had spooked the lords on both sides enough to step cautiously.
