Have you reached capacity, Spiral? I have to admit, reading through this thread has made me all kinds of curious to try AD&D again. It's been years since I ever played it (and I never played it much back then).
If you've got a spot open (not sure at this point), I'd be up for joining in.

I have one more slot..it's yours, post with what you want to be and "at" will no doubt offer a quick summary of what you need to do.. (assuming you are short of 2nd ed rulebooks).

Rock on!
I'm not sure what to play, so I'll just start with ability scores. I'll hunt through the thread for the specs and get rolling.

Summary: 15, 13, 13, 11, 9, 7 Anything except a paladin, ranger, or specialist wizard. Bards and druids need that 15 in charisma (and a few other reqs), the rest just need a 9 or better in their primary stat (str-fighter, int-wizard, wis-priest, dex-thief). Another barbarian would be min str12, con12, dex9. Current party is a hard-hitting barbarian, heavily armoured fighter&guard, invoker mage, thundering war priest, and elven thief.

How's multi-classing work? I'm thinking a Half-Elf Mage/Thief

300000xp, that'll get you... level 9 mage / level 9 thief (you split your xp down the middle)
Note that only a full elf would be able to get the benefit of wearing elven chain while casting spells, subject to DM's ruling (I see no reason why half-elves wouldn't also qualify)

I could do Elf or Half-Elf, really; I'm not too particular. Is there any particular reason why a Half-Elf would be a good race to pick, or are they about as advantage-stunted in 2nd as in 3rd?

Is there any particular reason why a Half-Elf would be a good race to pick, or are they about as advantage-stunted in 2nd as in 3rd? They get lots of freaky multiclassing options, including the much coveted mage/cleric and mage/druid mix (and the much paperworking fighter/mage/cleric and fighter/mage/thief mixes). They can also advance to any level as a bard...

Ohh right, I'd forgotten about the old Fighter/Mage/Thief. Man, talk about doing a little bit of everything.
Those options sound like a pain to work with. I think I'll just go with Mage/Thief. I'll go ahead and do full Elf to get the ball rolling here.

Figher/mage/thief isn't actually any harder than mage/thief - you get a couple more hp, a slightly better THAC0, and the option to specialise (which is nice). It's not as if the fighter has any class features. You would drop to fighter(7), mage(8), thief(8) though. In any event, elf is +1 dex, -1 con. If you check around this thread or the main characters thread you'll find some starter prices for magical equipment - level 9/9 means 6750 to spend. (for reference 7/8/8 is 5750 to spend)

The real question I'd have to ask is-- what's the difference between Fighter 7 / Mage 8 / Thief 8 and Mage 9 / Thief 9? Obviously items by your last post, and probably thief skills and magic spells would go down, while THAC0 and such improve. It's hard for me to compare, knowing nothing.
If I did Fighter/Mage/Thief it'd be to take advantage of some better abilities using a bow, as whatever the case I have no intention of going toe-to-toe with anything. I was basically planning to pick up a fair number of utility spells and fill in thief skills with whatever we happen to be lacking, and pick up some decent ability with a bow. If I can still do that with Fighter/Mage/Thief, cool. If that's going to limit me, I'll just stick with Mage/Thief.
Definitely planning to pick up Elven Chain, and I saw the post regarding that earlier. Probably some kind of good bow, not sure about magical ammunition yet, and a couple of utility things. I'll look over the thread that's floating around the main section.

Hey, we could be brothers or somethong.
Not that I've even finished my character yet or decided on a sex. I really need to get on that.

The real question I'd have to ask is-- what's the difference between Fighter 7 / Mage 8 / Thief 8 and Mage 9 / Thief 9? Differences : Weapons : as a fighter you can specialise. With a bow this means +2 to hit at point blank range and the chance to fire before init is rolled if your ready. With melee weapons you get +1 to hit, +2 to damage, and 2 attacks instead of 3/2 (if you have a fighter class) or 1 (no fighter class) each round. THAC0 : fighter 7 is THAC0 14. mage/thief 9 is THAC0 16 (lower=better) Hitpoints : An average of 3 more hitpoints (total) for triple classing Mage 8 instead of 9 : Lose your (only) 5th level spell Thief 8 instead of 9 : 30 less thief skill points (270 instead of 300) and backstab for x2 instead of x3. So - in conclusion. Of note you lose your 5th level spell slot and 1k of items in return for more than doubling you melee power with chosen weapons (as you make up for lost backstab in raw THAC0/attack rate). Improvements with a bow are less significant (a crossbow or throwable weapon however does gain a rate increase)

Well, what the hell? I'll go Fighter/Mage/Thief, and probably specialize in shortbow. Maybe I'll change my mind and go for shortsword (though I kinda liked the notion of staying ranged). We'll see.
Stats will be Str: 13 Dex: 16 Con: 10 Int: 13 Wis: 9 Cha: 7

Elf thief level 11
HP 43 AC: Thac0:
str: 12 dex: 16 Con: 13 Int: 9 Wis: 12 Cha 11
Saving Throws PPD: 11 RSW: 10 PP: 10 BW: 14 Spell: 11
Thief skills Pick Pockets: 50 % Open Locks: 65 % Find/Disarm Traps: 75 % Move Silent:55 %` Hide in Shadows: 60 % Detect Noise:55 % Climb Walls:90 % Read Languages: 30 %
Backstab x4
NWPs 1. Alertness 2 3 4 5
WPs 1. Longsword 2. Longbow 3 4
Ok, that's without any bonuses and penalties applied whatsoever other than the numbers that At gave me initially (not sure if they reflected anything that elfs might get or if my stats might impact anything in any way. I do have 16 dex and all. Not sure if that factors in or anything. I have to check that link Wicksy gave me because I need to know what NWPs are out there, since I forgot most of them, and what weapons/gear might be handy. Other than a Thief's kit and some of that armor that At is hyping up, I'm not sure what else I would need other than basic magic on my weapons and armor. I'm trying to keep this simple so as not to confuse myself too much. )

I think it'd be smart for us to divide and conquer with regards to Thief Skills. One of us could go very 'scout' oriented with high Move Silently, Hide, Detect Noise, Climb Walls. Another could go with Read Language, Detect/Disarm Traps, Open Lock, and Pick Pocket. I dunno, just a thought.
On the other hand, I'll have a lot less skill points to work with than you, I'm guessing. And I can understand wanting to be decent at several things.
